A combination of strong offense from Oakwood and a breakdown in defense from Schlarman led to the Comets defeating the Hilltoppers 8-7 in the Vermilion Valley Conference opener for both teams on Friday at Danville Stadium.

Schlarman had a 7-2 lead going into the fifth inning, but errors got Oakwood back into the game. The Comets would score three runs each in the fifth and sixth innings to clinch the win.

Cameron Lee had three hits and three RBIs for Oakwood, while Jimmy Rutledge had two RBIs and Logan Cronk and winning pitcher Casey Fletcher each had won RBI.

Tyler Brennan had three RBIs for Schlarman while Alex Neal, Adam Pellegrini and Lucas Spezia each had one RBI.

The Hilltoppers drop to 3-2 and 0-1 in the VVC and will play Effingham St. Anthony and Danville today at Danville Stadium. The Comets are now 4-1 and 1-0.

Hoopeston Area 3

ARMSTRONG — Dylan Howie drove in the game winning run to complete a four-run seventh inning as the Trojans got past the Cornjerkers.

Howie had two RBIs for Armstrong-Potomac while Dawson Loschen and Luke Gernand each had one.

DJ Davis got the win for the Trojans and had 16 strikeouts.

Alex Moore had two RBIs for Hoopeston Area and Corey Rudin added one.

The Trojans are 4-4 and 2-0 in the VVC and will face Westville on Wednesday while the Cornjerkers are 2-3 and 0-2 and will host Watseka for a doubleheader today.

MILFORD — Lee Spezia and Kyle Brazas each hit solo home runs as the Tigers defeated the Bearcats.

Jeffery Thompson had three hits and scored a run for Westville while Dillon Turner struck out six and walked three in six innings to clinch the win.

Trent Callison took the loss for Milford while Clayton Rieches had two hits for the Bearcats.

The Tigers are 2-2 and 1-0 in the VVC and will play at the Urbana Invitational today.

DANVILLE — The Hilltoppers remained undefeated with another five-inning victory.

Kelsey Sollars had three hits for Schlarman, who ended up with 14 hits for the game, while Brittany Hay, Lynzie Fields, Lea Hall and Sydne Bryant each had two.

Hay, Fields, Sollars and Lohgan Bryant each had two RBIs while Hall, Sydne Bryant and Darrian Chrzanoski each had one.

Sollars also got the win on the mound and struck out nine batters and walked only one.

Chelsea Vinson had two hits and the only RBI for Oakwood as it drops to 1-4 and 0-1 in the VVC and will face Hoopeston Area on Monday.

The Hilltoppers are 7-0 and 2-0 in the VVC and will take on St. Thomas More today.

ST. JOSEPH — The Blue Devils could only get three hits as they lost to the Spartans in non-conference action.

Lauren McKenzie had two hits for Bismarck Henning and Bailey Bryant had the other hit. Frankie Shoaf took the loss for Bismarck-Henning, who is 4-2 and will play at the Rantoul Tournament today.
