DANVILLE – In addition to a fun night of Summer Sounds downtown again Friday night with the band The Rock Posse, families are encouraged to attend for a Family Fun Night with the theme “On the Road Again.”
As part of the Summer Sounds concert, Downtown Danville Inc. is sponsoring this event from 5 p.m. to 9 p.m.
DDI Board President Amy McKinley said Summer Sounds is geared more toward adults.
The board, including committee members McKinley, Carol Nichols, Pat Bowers, Carla Cahill and Amanda Vickery, started thinking about some more activities geared toward children and families, and to encourage more people to come downtown.
“Downtown should be the hub for the city,” McKinley said.
To fit into this Friday night’s theme, North Street will be closed off between Vermilion and Hazel streets, to bring in some trucks and cars, such as military and emergency vehicles and a bucket truck. Children can explore the vehicles and parents can have photo opportunities, McKinley said.
She said the Marines will be there with some giveaways.
Attendees also can visit downtown businesses and pick up a free Hot Wheels vehicle. This is while supplies last of the approximately 200 Hot Wheels cars, and one vehicle per family per location.
Businesses participating include: Cafe 13, 13 N. Vermilion; Senior Source Danville - Live Life Connected, 7 E. North St.; Lift Off Downtown, 149 N. Vermilion; The Heron Restaurant, 34 N. Vermilion; Fischer Theatre, 158 N. Vermilion); Vintage Villains - Venue, 126 N. Vermilion; Mud & Honey Boutique, Towne Centre; Memories By Design, Towne Centre; Vermilion County Democratic Party, 15 N. Vermilion; and Flea Pickers USA, 19 E. North.
Families can then bring the Hot Wheels vehicle to Temple Plaza to see if that vehicle is a winner for an additional prize. Announcement will be at 7:30 p.m.
In addition, there will be an escape room in a tent by Adventure Arcade Escape Room for $10 per person. McKinley said the escape room will be fairy tale-themed about the Big Bad Wolf and the Three Little Pigs.
McKinley’s Senior Source Danville also will have a story time for children.
Food and drinks will be available from vendors as well as downtown businesses.
“We’re excited about it. I think it will be fun,” McKinley said of the night.
The Summer Sounds Family Fun Nights will continue on July 5 and Aug. 2. First Fridays in the city are expected to start back in September.
