Hoopeston High School and Middle School has a new digital communication sign on Illinois Route 9. Superintendent Hank Hornbeck told the school board that the software would be downloaded today.

“It’s a good communication tool with the community,” Hornbeck said, “and we can do a lot more with it.”

In other business, the school board heard a Positive Behavior Intervention Support report for the 2008-09 school year by Ann Penicook.

“Hoopeston’s name is quite well-known in PBIS communities,” Penicook said. “It’s a testament to all the administrators here.”

The PBIS program improves behaviors in the school with positive reinforcements and incentives. Each school must meet the state requirement of 70 percent or higher to show the schools are effectively using the program for behavior problems, according to Penicook. Maple Grade School in its first year had a 93 percent decrease in referrals for bad behavior. Maple and the high school are both in their first year in the program.

The program has been in the district for three years, Penicook said, and is doing an excellent job.

In other action, the school board:

-- Accepted the low bid of Better Paving for $25,600 to resurface Honeywell Grade School parking lot.

-- Approved the 2009-10 school calendar and high school student manual.

-- Learned from Hornbeck there would be a special education workload plan update, an Integrated Pest Management Policy, and Continuous Growth Plan brought to the board for action next month.

-- Learned that German will be offered next year in the high school curriculum. High school Principal Larry Maynard said 31 students have already enrolled in the class. He said the school also is looking at adding anatomy and physiology to the curriculum.

-- Accepted a letter of intent to retire from Maggie Cope for the end of the 2010-11 school year and accepted the retirement of Cindy Masengale, district librarian, at the end of the 2008-09 school year.
