The Vermilion Division of Aqua Illinois announced that it will begin its annual system-wide hydrant flushing/maintenance program May 18.

All 1,829 fire hydrants will be flushed and inspected to ensure proper operation. It is anticipated that it will take four weeks to complete the flushing and inspection of all of the fire hydrants in Aqua’s water system.

Aqua’s hydrant flushing and inspection program is designed to improve water quality and ensure that fire hydrants will operate correctly when needed. Crews will work each weekday at different locations throughout the distribution system until all hydrants are flushed.

During the flushing program, customers may experience decreased water pressure or temporary discoloration of their water; this is not harmful. Discoloration can be eliminated by running cold water for a few minutes until it clears.

Questions regarding this program can be directed to Aqua’s Division Engineer, Joshua Gabehart at 442-3063, ext. 126.
