The city council’s public works committee was expected to act on a proposal Tuesday night to prohibit parking on Hazel Street in two areas.

But because of opposition from Wolford Apartments and Your Family Resource Connection about prohibiting parking on both sides of Hazel from Harrison Street to 150 feet north, officials left off that part of the ordinance for the time being.

City Engineer David Schnelle met with Tom Dilts, YFRC executive director, and representatives with the Wolford after Tuesday’s meeting to hear concerns.

Dilts said the agency would lose eight on-street parking spots. The prohibited parking also would impact YFRC’s loading zone for clients.

Clients go in and out of the building for day care and various services, including domestic violence assistance, he said.

The public works committee recommended prohibiting parking on the west side of Hazel Street from North Street to 75 feet south.

The parking changes relate to intersection signage changes that will occur this month.

The intersection signage changes are in preparation for possible one-way to two-way street changes that city officials believe will improve traffic patterns between Main and Fairchild streets.

Changes would include converting Franklin, Walnut and Hazel streets from one-way to two-way streets.

The engineering study also recommends converting one-way Jackson Street to two-way from Main to Clay streets and eliminating traffic signals at Hazel and North streets, Hazel and Williams, Jackson and Williams and Walnut and Williams.

The two-way street changes would occur next year, with council approval.

Mayor Scott Eisenhauer said holding off on action regarding the other Hazel Street parking changes gives Schnelle time to talk with those in opposition “to reach an amicable solution.”

Alderman, with a tie-breaking vote from Eisenhauer, last month approved intersection design studies and the intersection signage changes. But some are leery of the $200,000 motor fuel tax price tag to make the conversions to two-way streets.
