DANVILLE — In what would surely be Heaven for Popeye's pal, Wimpy, the Vermilion County Conservation District once again is set to grill up another 800 hamburgers at its annual Cheeseburgers and Fun event.

The fundraiser — which also includes live bands, the Howl at the Moon run, and other activities — is scheduled for Aug. 10 at Kennekuk County Park.

But if cheeseburgers aren't your thing, event chair Rick Strebing has you covered as several other food vendors will be in attendance.

"I've got pizza, I've got a gentleman who cooks ribs and tips," Strebing said. "Then I've got another gal who does tenderloins and things like that. Another guy who does lemon shake-ups and elephant ears. I've got four vendors coming out this year."

There is free admission, but donations are welcome. Food will need to be purchased from the vendors, with the famous cheeseburgers, with chips and drink, going for $6. Vendors will serve noon to 9 p.m. The Conservation Foundation's cheeseburgers will hit the grill at 3 p.m.

All proceeds from the event will support the Kickapoo Rail Trail, which is seeing work from St. Joseph to Oakwood. When finished, it will be a paved walking and bike trail from Urbana to Danville. The 6.7-mile trail from Urbana to St. Joseph is completed and open to the public now.

The Vermilion Conservation District board of directors has scheduled a special meeting for 12:30 p.m. Monday in the Environmental Education Center at Kennekuk County Park to approve work on the next segment of the trail in Vermilion County from Gray's Siding Road to the Vermilion County Fairgrounds Road.

Strebing did note that the Aug. 10 event does not serve alcohol, but coolers are permitted.

"Bring your lawn chairs and your family, and we'll have somebody on the main road taking donations if anybody wants to give."

The Kennekuk Road Runners' Howl at the Moon eight-hour run and walk begins at 7 a.m.

The Cruise-In runs from noon to 9 p.m. and will feature all cars, trucks and tractors. Expect to see antiques, classics, customs, rat rods and specialties. There are no entry fees for participants, but there also is no judging of vehicles. This is just a fun event to show off and everyone is welcome.

The Vermilion Voles Vintage Baseball Jamboree will take the field at noon.

Joyful Bubbles will be available for the kids at 2 p.m.

Lady Luck will take the stage from 4-6 p.m., followed by Captain Rat and the Blind Rivets from 7-9 p.m.

There also are sponsorship opportunities available. Contact the Vermilion County Conservation Foundation at 662-2142 for more information.
