DANVILLE — An incident at the Vermilion County Courthouse Friday morning landed a deputy and a prisoner in the hospital.
According to a press release issued Friday afternoon by Vermilion County Sheriff Department’s Chief Investigator Capt. Michael Hartshorn, a deputy sheriff was moving an inmate between cells about 10:06 a.m. Inmates are temporarily housed in cells within the courthouse when they are scheduled to appear in court.
“After opening the door of the holding cell, an inmate attacked the deputy and stabbed him in the face multiple times,” Hartshorn said in the release.
The deputy discharged his firearm and struck the inmate.
No information was given on how the inmate might have obtained a weapon.
Both the deputy and the inmate were transported to OSF Sacred Heart Medical Center in Danville for treatment. No word has been give on the condition of either the deputy or the inmate.
The incident is under investigation by Illinois State Police. Hartshorn said further information would be released Friday afternoon.
