A Danville man died from injuries suffered in a crash early Wednesday on Illinois Route 1 north of Georgetown.

Vermilion County Coroner Jane McFadden said Tyler J. Pope, 29, of Danville, died Wednesday afternoon. An autopsy was performed Wednesday afternoon.

McFadden did not have information on the condition of the drivers or occupants of the other vehicles involved.

State police said Wednesday a 7-year-old boy who was a passenger in Pope’s car also suffered serious injuries. His name has not been released.

Police said the accident occurred at 7:47 a.m. Wednesday when a southbound Ford Focus driven by Pope struck the rear of a Toyota Camry, which caused the Camry to run off the road. Pope’s vehicle then struck the rear of a southbound GMC Sierra, which caused the Sierra to cross into the northbound lane and hit a northbound Chevrolet Equinox head-on.

The drivers of the Camry, a 40-year-old man from Oakwood, and the Equinox, a 20-year-old man from Georgetown, were taken to an area hospital with non-life threatening injuries.

All those involved were wearing seat belts, and police have not released other names of those involved.

The accident caused Route 1 to be closed until about 3 p.m. Wednesday.

The Illinois State Police and the Vermilion County Coroner’s office continue to investigate.
