DANVILLE – Members of the city council’s Public Works Committee will meet for their regular monthly meeting next week, but it’s public services news city officials have been waiting for that’s also on the committee’s agenda.
The city has received the award letter from the U.S. Department of Homeland Security for the 2018 Assistance to Firefighters Grant.
The grant amount is $251,700 with a city match of $25,170 for a total amount of $276,870.
It was almost a year ago that the city council approved applying for the grant.
The city previously accepted the Staffing for Adequate Fire and Emergency Response grant to hire six new firefighters, and this other Federal Emergency Management Agency grant is to help with equipment and training costs.
The grant amount is a little less than first discussed last year. The grant is competitive.
In October 2018, Danville Firefighters Local 429 Union President Brian Hogg said the SAFER grant is about personnel and this grant is about equipment and training. Hogg said the federal funding would pay for 90 percent of the costs. The city match would be 10 percent. The grant request discussed then was for $288,750 and the city’s match would have been about $26,250.
Hogg said the grant would be for gear, hazardous material and emergency medical technician training and classes for the new hired firefighters. The grant also was to help pay for overtime while the firefighters were in training.
Also next week with the city’s police department, six new probationary police officers will be sworn in on Wednesday at city hall.
In other business for the Public Works Committee, it will consider:
• Approving an $80,184 contract with Hudson Insurance Co. for fleet liability insurance for Danville Mass Transit.
• Purchasing a reconditioned transit engine for a 2008 Gillig low floor transit bus that needs an engine replacement. The cost is $56,682 for purchase, installation and warranty of the reconditioned engine from Cummins Crosspoint of Normal, Ill. Funding comes from DMT line items for materials to maintain vehicles and maintenance of vehicles.
