DANVILLE — Many signs point to the end of summer — Labor Day has come and gone; children are back in school; temperatures begin to cool.
And boating season draws to a close.
The Danville Boat Club will mark the transition into autumn with an End of Summer Party and River Cruise on Saturday.
"It's a party we do every year," said Club Manager Michele Ryan. "It closes out the boating season, knowing it's coming to an end. And it gives the chance for some of the members — and the community — a chance to ride on the boat that don't have an opportunity any other time."
Visitors can get a free, hour-long pontoon boat ride around Lake Vermilion, then stay for a chicken dinner. The dinner will cost $16.
Voyages are scheduled from 4-5 p.m., with the meal following at 5:30.
"Some will take a short trip around the lake," Ryan said. "Some will go up the river as long as the water levels are where they need to be to get that far."
Wine, beer and pop will be available on the boat for any thirsty passengers.
Dinner will include both grilled and fried chicken, mashed potatoes, vegetables, a salad bar and a dessert.
Ryan said even those not interested in a boat ride are welcome to come for the dinner — people just need to tell the Boat Club they are attending.
To make a reservation, call (217) 442-4021 or email email@example.com. She just needs to have a count by 8 p.m. tonight, though some exceptions might be made.
The club — located at 15750 Boat Club Road in Danville — is also available for weddings, banquets and catering.
But first and foremost, it's a place for boating enthusiasts to get together and enjoy the outdoors.
"If I owned a boat, I'd want to be a member of our club," Ryan said. "I'd want some place to park it. You just pull up, jump on your boat and go."
