LOCAL ROUNDUP: Mustangs win invitational

VEEDERSBURG, Ind. —  With a 5-0 record and four individual champions, the Fountain Central wrestling team beat the field on Saturday at the Fountain Central Invitational.

Klint Byers was 5-0 at 126 pounds for the Mustangs, while Alex Haddock won at 132 (5-0), Jack Bolin (5-0) won at 145 and Billy Pigg took the 195 crown (5-0).

Seeger was tied with South Vermillion and North Vermillion and had champions in Quentin Johnson at 113 (5-0), Caleb Hanthorne at 120 (5-0) and Jordan Horath at 152 (4-1).

North Vermillion had individual winners with Wade Harrison at 160 (5-0) and Dakota Uplinger at 182 (5-0).

Trojans, Devils compete in Invite

COVINGTON, Ind. — Noah Navarre (106 pounds) and Dalton hardy (220) were each 5-0 to win individual titles for the host Trojans at the Covington Invitational.

The Trojans were 2-2-1 for the day, not good enough to get past team champions Benton Central, who had a 5-0 record.

Bismarck-Henning was also in the Invite and had title runs by Tyler Pasley (145) and Jared Noel (182).

WESTVILLE — Robert Elliott ad Jeffery Thompson each had 10 points but the Tigers could not get rebound from a 22-2 first quarter deficit against the Spartans.

Tanner Cox had eight points while Kyle Brazas and Jordan Romo each had six for Westville, who will play Heritage on Tuesday.

GEORGETOWN — Kyle Coburn had eight points but it was not enough as the Buffaloes lost at home.

Dylan Bina had six points while Tyson Reed and Chase Hughes each had five for Georgetown-Ridge Farm, who will play Salt Fork on Friday.

ARMSTRONG — Wade Rogers has 23 points, but he was the only Trojan in double figures as the lost to Cissna Park.

Blake Davis had seven points while Shawn Johnson had six for Armstrong-Potomac, who will play Milford on Friday.

WILLIAMSPORT, Ind. — Nathan DeVillez had 14 points as the Patriots easily defeated Clinton Prairie.

Jordan Stover had 11 points for Seeger, while Caleb Orahood had seven and Seth Lynch and Dakota Ware each had six.

VEEDERSBURG, Ind. — The Mustangs put on a defensive stand late in the game as they held off the charge from North Montgomery.

Koby Pierce had 18 to lead Fountain Central while Like Davenport had 12, Ethan Woodrow had 11 and Sam Woodrow added 10.

The Mustangs are 3-0 and will play Clinton Prairie on Friday.

URBANA — Alexus Jimson-Miller had 24 points, five steals, three assists and four rebounds as the Vikings beat the Tigers in Big 12 Conference play.

Breanna Keys had six points, Michaela Jones had five while Jade Carter and Lynette Buggs each had four with 11 rebounds and two steals for Danville, who held Urbana to no points in the third quarter.

The Vikings will host Normal Community on Thursday.

ARMSTRONG — Tied at 13-13 at halftime, the Trojans outscored the Illinineks 21-7 in the second half to get the win.

Morgan Zindars had 17 points for Armstrong-Potomac, while Rachel Miles had six and Erika Sieberns added four.

The Trojans will travel to Milford on Monday.

GEORGETOWN — Brittany Hay had 20 points, eight rebounds, seven steals and four assists as the Buffaloes easily beat Arthur Christian.

Maya Green had 13 points for Georgetown-Ridge Farm while Callan Hall had eight, Hannah Brandt and Catie Brandt each had six and Emily Bruce added five.

The Buffaloes are 6-1 and will play their first Vermilion Valley Conference game on Monday against Salt Fork.

WESTVILLE — Ashley Hoffman had 16 points with 10 rebounds and four steals, but it was not enough as the Tigers lost to the Spartans.

JoDee Ottino had seven and Mikayla Rolinitis had six for Westville, who is 2-6 and will play Hoopeston Area on Monday.

CHRISMAN — Sarah Ellis had 13 points, three assists and three steals as the Cardinals defeated the Bearcats.

Chey Warner had 10 points for Chrisman, while Abbi Bush had eight and Shelby Warner and Jordyn Lunger each had six with Shelby Warner getting 10 rebounds.

Erin McNally and Kylie Thursh each had eight points to lead Milford while Mindy Garrelts and Samantha Wilken each had six.

The Cardinals are 2-6 and will face Oakwood on Monday.

COVINGTON, Ind. — Aliah Larsen had 19 points as the Trojans had no problems with Clinton Central.

Andi Taylor had 18 for Covington while Avery Chezem had five points, seven assists and five steals.

The Trojans are 4-3 and will face Bismarck-Henning on Tuesday.

URBANA — The Vikings started the season in strong fashion, winning all the events against the Tigers.

“We wanted to have a fast start just to see where we are at,” Danville coach Carl Long said. “But they did great and we have improved from where we were at last year.”

Jon Delzell, Lucas Miller and Parker Arnholt each won two events for the Vikings. Delzell won the 100 freestyle (50.08 seconds) and the 50 freestyle in 22.08 seconds, only .08 seconds from the school record.

Miller won the 100 backstroke (1:03.61) and the 100 breaststroke (1:11.39), while Arnholt won the 200 freestyle (2:10.73) and the 500 freestyle (6:07.30).

Max Shannon won the 200 individual medley (2:27.37) while Tristan Wolfe won the 100 backstroke (1:02) and Jordan Ledesma won the diving event (159.45).

The 200 medley relay team of Wolfe, Miller, Shannon and Ledesma (1:54), the 200 freestyle relay team of Miller, Ledesma, Delzell and Sam Bernardi (1:39) and the 400 freestyle relay team of Bernardi, Wolfe, Shannon and Delzell (4:03) won for Danville, who will have a meet with Bloomington next Saturday.

DANVILLE — The 20th ranked Lady Jaguars dumped out to a 10-2 lead and did not look back in beating the Augustana junior varsity team.

Stephanie Lord had 18 points for DACC while Javonna Smith had 13, Emily Montgomery had 12 and Megan Hiner had 10 points and six steals.

The Lady Jaguars are 8-2 and will face Vincennes University on Wednesday.

CHAMPAIGN — The Illini blew a 60-57 lead with three minutes left to lose to the Buffaloes.

Alexis Smith had 17 points, eight rebounds, four assists and four steals for Illinois, while Karisma Penn and Taylor Tuck each had 11 with Penn getting three blocks and a steal.

Ivory Crawford had nine points and Amber Moore added eight points and three steals for Illinois, who drops to 4-3 and will travel to Lubbock, Texas on Wednesday to play Texas Tech.

JR. HIGH BASKETBALL

Schlarman advances to final


NORMAL — The Hilltoppers’ seventh grade girls rolled through two teams to advance to Thursday’s Class 1A final against Lincoln West Lincoln-Broadwell.

Schlarman Academy defeated Peoria Limestone Walters 40-31 in the quarterfinals as Arieal Scott had 21 points and Anaya Peoples had nine.

In the semifinal game, the Hilltoppers defeated Siegel St. Michael’s 44-20 as Scott had 22 and Peoples added 14.

In the Class 2A tournament in LeRoy, the Bismarck-Henning seventh-grade girls team lost to Winchester 34-14 as Annie Nelson had seven points and Kylee Watkins added four.

The Hilltoppers will play for the championship on Thursday at 7:30 p.m.
