With the victory, Danville ends the year with a 4-5 overall record and a 4-4 mark in the Big 12 Conference. It's the eight consecutive season that the Vikings have ended the year with a .500 or better record in the Big 12 Conference.
"These kids have had some tough ups-and-downs during the year, but I was really glad to see them finish it right tonight,'' Luke said.
The Vikings lost two of its first four games, against Bloomington and Normal West, with touchdowns in the final 30 seconds leaving them with a 1-3 record. Danville fought back to 3-3 with back-to-back wins against Decatur Eisenhower and Decatur MacArthur, the playoff hopes were dashed with losses to Champaign Central and Normal Community.
"Our kids showed they have some pride and they care about wearing the maroon,'' Luke said. "We had some close games that we almost got during the season, and if we had, we would be sitting in a playoff situation.
"Even without the playoffs, this game and this program was still important to our kids. That's good to see.''
It was so good, that Luke joined his team in singing the school song after the victory, and the players honored the program with Viking jumping jacks before joining their fans for pictures, hugs and sharing of some very special memories.
