It's a great time of year to be out, about

It appears there is going to be a break in the weather as we get some fall-like temperatures throughout the area this weekend.

The warm, dry weather has given a boost to the hemorrhagic disease that has plagued our deer population for the past several years. A drop in the temperatures along with some rainfall will help our deer herd in that department.

With the archery deer season about to enter its second week, many area outdoors people have put their rods and reels away and are heading to the woods in search of deer. This leaves the area lakes and ponds to the anglers that want to pursue their sport deep into fall and early winter.

October is a great month for crappie, bluegill, and redear sunfish as well as largemouth and smallmouth bass. It is the big catfish that is in the news this week. Troy Kiser of Danville weighed in a 42 pound flathead catfish this week from the Big Vermilion River. The fish was caught on live bait and measured 39.5 inches in length.

This is also a great time of the year for a walk in the woods to see the changing leaf colors and to hear them crackling beneath your feet as you walk along.

Listen carefully and you will hear the squirrels crackling leaves on the ground or cutting nuts high in the trees. It won’t be long before you smell the burning leaves or the burning firewood smell of late autumn, signaling that it’s time to get ready for the cold to come. Enjoy the fall and get yourself outside!

Reminders

Get your children to the Danville Big R Store on North Vermilion Street on Saturday to have their picture taken with live deer. Pictures will be available for the children with the live deer as well as free balloons, and bounce houses from 9 a.m. – 4 p.m. There will be free hot dogs from 11 a.m. – 2 p.m. and free popcorn from 9 a.m. – 11 a.m. This is a great chance to get your children close to the outdoors.
