Defense plays a big part in Patriots' victory

WEST LEBANON, Ind. — On a muddy field, the Seeger Patriots’ defense shined the most in getting a 31-7 win on Friday over Covington.

The Patriots’ defense scored on a 33-yard interception return from Collin Hoskins and a fumble recovery in the end zone from Frank Briddick.

“These were the first two defensive touchdowns we have scored on the season,” Seeger coach Tom Cook said. “We talked to the team before the game and told them to focus on the small things and the big things with take care of themselves.”

Seeger started the game with a long five and a half minute drive running most of it for a 7- 0 lead. As the quarter continued, the teams exchanged turnovers, but it was Seeger making the big play with Hoskins intercepting a pass for a TD to give the Patriots a 14-0 lead.

The second quarter had no scoring for either team as the teams couldn’t manage many yards in a defensive struggle as the score stayed 14- 0 at halftime.

With the ground game not working for Covington, they started taking the ball to the air and with 4:55 remaining in the third quarter, the Trojans struck with a 84 yard TD pass from Halen Noble to Quentin Andrews to cut the lead 14- 7.

Seeger answered Covington’s touchdown with a long drive marching methodically down the field with a Trevor Bowlus run to make the score 21 -7 with 15 seconds remaining in the third quarter.

The Patriots then forced a fumble that deflated the Trojans. Just when the Trojan defense was on the ropes they came up with a big play and they intercepted a pass on the 4-yard line with 7:46 left in the game to try to make a comeback.

”I thought the team played a much better defensive game this week only giving up 2 offensive scores compared to last week’s defensive effort when they gave up more scores,” Covington coach Travis Brown said.

Unfortunately, the next play from scrimmage for the Trojans was a fumble in the end zone and Briddick fell on it to increase the Patriot lead to 28-7.

A 38 yard field goal closed out the scoring.

”I thought the players executed better offensively tonight than in weeks past and their focus was better,” Cook said. “The players adapted to the new system and they performed it better tonight.”

Seeger is 2-3 and Covington drops to 0-5.
