Dans pitcher, manager receive postseason honors

DANVILLE — A record-setting Prospect League season led to the Danville Dans collecting a pair of awards on Monday.

Left-hander pitcher Troy Conyers was named the Roland Hemond Prospect of the Year, while Jason Watson was named the Manager of the Year.

Conyers, a sophomore-to-be from the University of San Diego, was 5-1 with 1.53 ERA this summer and he struck out a team-high 60 batters, which was good enough for second in the Prospect League, while walking just 18.

“The Danville Dans have had 22 alumni who have went on to the Major Leagues and it would be a pleasure to add Troy Conyers to that list some day,’’ said Jeanie Cooke, managing partner for the Danville Dans.

Watson, who is the head coach from Dickinson State University in North Dakota, led the 2013 Danville Dans to a Prospect League record 41 victories and the team also set a league mark with a 11-game win streak in early July. Danville was also ranked as high as No. 11 in the Perfect GAme USA’s weekly rankings of summer collegiate baseball teams.

“This was an exciting season for the Dans,’’ Cooke said. “Jason has guided this team of great guys to many achievements this summer.’’
