LOCAL ROUNDUP: McGuire heads to shootout final

PEORIA — While the Danville boys basketball team’s dream of making the Class 4A state title game was dashed in regional play, Viking Devyn McGuire will be part of the festivities in the Class 4A state tournament finals.

McGuire hit 10 out of 15 shots and 6 out of 10 in a playoff to advance to the final four of the Class 4A long-distance shootout.

The Danville senior will join Rockford Boylan Catholic’s Brock Stull, Bradley-Bourbonnais’ Bennet Schimmelpfenning and Mundelein’s Quinn Pokora in the finals tonight at around 8:15 p.m.

MEN’S COLLEGE BASKETBALL

Jaguars reap rewards

DANVILLE — Even though the DACC basketball season fell short at the Region 24 tournament, the Jaguars picked up a bunch of individual honors on Wednesday.

Sophomore guard Chris Whitehead was named Region 24 and Mid-West Athletic Conference Player of the Year. Whitehead averaged 15-2 points per game in Region 24 play with 4.7 assists per game.

Derek Shouse, another sophomore guard, joined Whitehead in both the All-Region 24 and first All-MWAC teams. Shouse had 818 points in his two seasons at DACC, putting him 10th on the school’s All-Time scoring list, and is second all-time in made 3-pointers with 132.

Freshman center Ronnie White was named MWAC Freshman of the Year. White averaged 10.2 poitns per game and set school records for blocks in a game with eight and has the single-season and career marks for blocks with 112. He was also named second team All-MWAC.

DACC coach Mike Carpenter was named both the Region 24 and MWAC Coach of the Year for leading the team to a 28-4 record, with a 17-game winning streak and was the first team to go undefeated in MWAC play.

They also got as high as No. 2 in the NJCAA Division II poll and won the most games of any team in DACC history.

“We’re very happy for Chris, Derek, and Ronnie. They have worked hard and deserve all the individual accolades they are receiving,” Carpenter said. “As coaches, we are most proud of what we did as a team this season. It was a heck of a run. This team will be remembered as one of the best, if not the best team, in the History of DACC Basketball, and that’s something we should all be extremely proud of. We had 1 bad game, and it happened at the worst time. Life goes on — we couldn’t be more proud of these young men.”
