DACC women still rule home court

DANVILLE — The Danville Area Community College Lady Jaguars continued to build on the home court dominance they established last season with an 83-44 win over the Lincoln Trail Lady Statesmen.

It was the Jaguars’ second consecutive home win this season and 14th in their last 16 home games.

All 10 Jaguars scored with Tierra Golightly leading the way with a game-high 17 points. Hillary Lively added 15 points, former Bismarck-Henning Blue Devil Samantha Siddens had a season-high 13, while Emily Montgomery and Stephanie Lord chipped in with 11 points each.

“I never really had a lot of confidence in my shot, but I have started to gain more confidence in my shot and to look for my shot more,” Siddens said. “I was able to get some points down low and I especially look for opportunities in the lane. My teammates got me some great looks on some dump downs and I always just try to take the best shot and hope it goes in.”

Both teams got off to a slow start with the Jaguars holding a 7-2 lead over five minutes into the game. Former Danville Viking Kelsie Coleman (6 points) started and scored the opening basket for the Lady Statesmen. The Jaguars would open a 32-18 lead and took a 36-26 lead into halftime.

The Jaguars never trailed but it would take a 28-9 burst to open the second half would blow the game open.

“We need to continue to get the second half production we have been getting, but we have to start out games better,” said DACC coach Kyle Bent. “We held them under 30 points in the first half which is great, but as we continue to get more game reps our first half offense will get better.

“We are a well conditioned team and that allows us to build on leads in the second half. Our kids have been able to buckle down not only physically, but also mentally in the second half of games. We also help each other out in exploiting mismatches late in games.”

Passing has been a key for success for the Jaguars.

“We work on passing a lot and for me that is something that also carried over from high school,” Siddens said. “We did a good job of passing in the lane tonight. Playing at this level the pace is so much faster and it’s a more upbeat game. You can’t be too hard on yourself when a play doesn’t go well and you have to communicate with your teammates. We are getting better at that as a team, but we are still working on it.”

Bent was pleased with the passing balance he saw from his team.

“We did a good job of sharing the ball again tonight, but we were also aggressive when we needed to be,” he said. “That forced some of the late mismatches and allowed us to take advantage of them. You have to be able to use each hand at this level to be effective on offense and that is something we are making great strides with and had some success with tonight.”

The Jaguars allowed 54 points in the first half of their home opener last Wednesday.

“We did a lot better on fouls tonight,” Siddens said. “We need to continue to buckle down on defense and to not reach as much. It’s my job in the game to try and bring some energy and to play without fouls and I was able to do that in the first half. Coach Bent sets a goal for us each game and tonight was turnovers. We were able to reach that goal and that is something we have gotten a lot better at since the beginning of the season.”

The Lady Jaguars move to 4-1 on the season and return to action Friday at the John A. Logan tournament against Triton.

“We have some work to do, but I am happy with where we are at after five games,” Bent said. “We are getting better and making strides.”
