Local Roundup: Rain keeps Bis-Henn golf at sixth

BLOOMINGTON —  The Bismarck-Henning golf team’s season ended with a downpour on Saturday as rains cancelled the last round of the State Tournament at Prairie Vista Golf Course.

The round will not be made up, making the scores after Friday’s first round the only scores that will be counted, which makes the Blue Devils sixth in the state.

“We played the first three holes, but then the rains came and they called it at around noon,” Bismarck-Henning coach Terry French said. “If they couldn’t get things together by 1 p.m., they were going to cancel.

“The guys were pumped for the round and wanted to go and try to move up the board. We wanted to try out best and move into the top three as a team.”

Andy Bott ended up the top finisher for the Blue Devils in eighth place, which will give him All-State honors.

Even with the disappointment of not finishing the tournament, French is still happy for the team, which will all return except for senior Austin Toler.

“I told them that out of 100 teams, we are among the top teams,” French said. “Also with Austin, many players have gone without even going to state and he was lucky to go twice in his career.”

PREP GIRLS TENNIS

Danville girls win sectional

CHAMPAIGN — The Danville girls tennis team already had places in next week’s state tournament confirmed, but a sectional title was still on the line Saturday.

With both Viking doubles teams and both singles players from Champaign Centennial advancing to finals action, it came down to tiebreakers and in the fifth round, Danville ended up winning by giving up fewer games than Centennial.

“It was nice to win the title,” Danville coach Mark Bacys said. “I feel that we are the best team in the area and it is nice to let that stay true.”

In doubles, Rachael and Becca Lewis defeated Amy Shah and Neha Patel 6-2, 7-6 (7-4) in the title game while Taylor Ellis beat Courtney Hart 6-0, 6-0 in the third-place singles game.

“The whole thing was a good less for them to stay focused and not take a game off because it does mean everything,” Bacys said. “We wanted this goal to get everyone since last year’s sectionals and that is what we did.”

The team will be going to Mount Prospect on Thursday to start play in the state tournament.
