LOCAL ROUNDUP: Fast start for DACC baseball

MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. — Danville Area Community College baseball coach Tim Bunton could not ask for a better start from his pitching staff.

In the Jaguars first four games of its season-opening trip to Myrtle Beach, S.C., they have allowed just seven runs as DACC has won three out of four.

“It’s the one thing that we thought would be our strength,’’ Bunton said. “Even the game we didn’t win, Jordan Richardson pounded the zone, gave up 11 hits, but we also committed four errors.

“We like our arms and we think we will be able to compete with them.’’

DACC (3-1) opened its trip with two wins on Sunday, a 9-0 victory over Olney in the opener followed by a 7-2 triumph over Kings College in the second game.

Then on Monday, the Jaguars started the day with a 5-2 loss to Lansing Community College of Michigan as DACC committed four errors, but the Jaguars came back with a 8-0 win over Owens Community College.

David Anderson, who threw six shutout innings against Olney, Zack Anderson, who had five shutout innings agains Kings College, and Austin Childerson, who had six shutout innings against Owens, are all three freshman for the Jaguars.

“We like their makeup and how they compete,’’ Bunton said.

Former Bismarck-Henning standout Tyler McKenzie has provided a good portion of the DACC offense in the first four games.

McKenzie has six hits — three of them doubles — and seven RBIs to lead the Jaguars.

“He’s been good,’’ Bunton said. “He was a guy that struggled in the cage before making the trip down here, but he has stayed with the approach.

“Tyler can flat-out hit, and he’s been really good so far.’’

Bunton is also pleased in freshman Aaron Kuper, who has five hits in the first four games, along with sophomores Mark Keller and Pat Cottrell.

DACC continues it’s eight-game season-opening trip to Myrtle Beach with a 6 p.m. game tonight against St. Clair Community College.
