Danville wrestlers split with Decatur teams

DANVILLE —  It was like night and day for the Danville Vikings wrestling team on Saturday morning in its triangular meet against Decatur Eisenhower and Decatur MacArthur.

Danville came out slow and looked sluggish against Eisenhower in the first half of the meet in losing 33-30. The Vikings really struggled against a game Generals squad in losing all of the matches that were wrestled with the only Viking wins came via forfeit.

Danville was able to rebound and wrestle with more intensity in the second half of the meet as it defeated the Generals 38-35.

Danville won seven of the matches against the Generals. Of the seven wins, three came by way of pinfall. Mario Frye (130), Zach Thomas (152) and Harley Grubb (160) all had pinfall wins for the Vikings.

Danville coach George Hiler was disappointed with the effort in the first half of the meet.

“It’s just mental, we weren’t mentally strong enough in the first meet,” Hiler said. “In the first matches the kids didn’t come out to wrestle, we laid on our backs and that’s what’s going to happen.”

Hiler was pleased that his kids were able to come back strong in the second set of matches and hopes his team can carry the momentum forward.

“The second match we came out and we were ready to wrestle; we just have to get mentally strong and as Big 12 (conference meet) comes up we have to be ready,” Hiler said. “We wrestled a lot tougher; hopefully we can wrestle the rest of the year like that.”

The Vikings honored seven seniors in between the two matches. The seniors honored were: Dominque Bolden, Tryce McMasters, Johnny Powell, Grubb, Mike Stingley, Andrew Miller, and Frye, who with his win moved his record to 28-5 on the season.

Coach Hiler had great things to say about all of his seniors, but mentioned two seniors who led this year’s team.

“Johnny Powell, who has been wrestling up a weight class all year, he is heart and soul. Johnny and Mario Frye are basically the heart and soul of the team,” Hiler said.

“I am going to miss them all. I can’t say enough about the seniors I’m definitely going to miss them; they started this with me and I’m going to hate to see them go.”
