---- — LINCOLN — The Danville boys basketball team were coming off a big win over Cahokia on Friday going into the final day of the Lincoln Holiday Tournament.

But the Vikings could not build on that win, losing to eventual champion Lincoln 44-33 and Morton 55-45.

“We were playing our third game in less than 24 hours, so we were exhausted,” Danville coach Ted Houpt said. “But a lot of our younger players were able to get a lot of experience and it can help us in the season.”

Against Morton, Denzel Smith had 19 points and Kylen Butler added 10. Butler was named to the All-Tournament Team for his efforts this week, including his 40-point performance against Cahokia.

“We just have to find some parts to complement him,” Houpt said. “Because he had a great tournament and he deserved to be All-Tournament.”

Even with the 1-4 mark after the tournament, Houpt said that this can only help out for the rest of the season.

“We were 1-4 again and we wanted to improve on that because we have not done so well the last few years in this tournament,” Houpt said. “But I think we found out what we were capable of with our win and I hope it can carry on when we get to conference play.”

The Vikings do not have to wait that long for conference action as they will travel to Decatur Eisenhower on Tuesday.

The Hilltoppers will next play on Friday when they will play Villa Grove-Heritage.

The Trojans beat Grant Park 47-38 in the seventh place game, while the Comets defeated Beecher 53-37 in the fifth place game.

Parker Lee earned All-Tournament honors for the Comets, who will play Westville on Friday.
