LOCAL ROUNDUP: Toppers lose Woodworth’s last game

CISSNA PARK — The Schlarman Academy baseball team will be back next season, but it will be without long-time coach Jason Woodworth.

Woodworth, who was baseball coach for 13 years and athletics director for eight, announced he would step down after the season, a season that ended for the Hilltoppers on Thursday with a 9-1 loss to Cissna Park in a Class 1A regional semifinal.

During his run, the Hilltoppers won nine conference championships, eight regional titles, two sectionals and one super-sectional title and a state quarterfinal run in 2006.

GILMAN — Clayton Rieches gave up only two hits and struck out five as the Bearcats advanced to the final of a Class 1A regional.

Alex Portwood had two RBIs for Milford, who five runs in the second for a 6-0 lead and would add three more in the sixth, while Rieches, Ryley Ward, Tanner Davenport and Kyle Bennett each had one RBI.

The Bearcats will take on host Iroquois West on Saturday for the regional title.

Attica 5


ATTICA, Ind. — Caleb Orahood had three hits and gave up only five hits on the mound as the Patriots defeated the Red Ramblers in Wabash River Conference.

Dakota Ware had two hits with three stolen bases for Seeger, who is 17-7 and 13-0 in the WRC and will play Rossville on Monday.

Justin Harmeson had three hits for Attica, who will play North White on Monday.

Leverenz, Hummer moves on to state


FLOSSMOOR — Danville’s Johnny Leverenz set a new school record with a run of one minute, 54.56 seconds to win the 800 meter run at an IHSA Class 3A sectional.

Caleb Hummer also won the 3,200 run in the sectional with a time of 9:31.50.

The two Vikings will start action next Friday at the Class 3A state meet in Charleston.

URBANA — The Vikings fought to tie things up in the sixth inning, but the Tigers was able to score in the bottom of the seventh to get the win.

Kristi Burghart had three hits and two RBIs for Danville while Chloe Davis had two RBIs and Jordan Ogle, Tera Baxter and Lindsey Loewenstein each had one.

The Vikings are 10-17 and 6-5 in the Big 12 Conference and will play Decatur MacArthur today.

ATTICA, Ind. — The Red Ramblers scored 10 runs in the third, but held off a late charge by the Patriots.

Karrah Pattengale had two home runs and three RBIs for Attica, while Kaylynn Kirkpatrick had a home run and three RBIs, Maci Kyger had two RBIs and Ashley Brindle and winning pitcher Torrie Ward each got one.

Nellie Andrews had three RBIs for Seeger, while MaKenna Cronk, McKenna Mitchell, Michelle Bailiff and Morgan Rademacher each had one.

COVINGTON, Ind. — Ali Holmes took the loss and drove in the only run for the Trojans as they lost in their regular season finale.

Regan Foster had two hits for Covington, who is 11-11 and will face Attica in the first round of sectional play next week.

VEEDERSBURG, Ind. — Miranda Synesael, Kiley Swisher and Madeline Rhea each won in singles as the Patriots swept the Red Ramblers in an IHSAA sectional.

The doubles teams of Bridget McGowen and Emmie Stevens and Becky and Jessi Middleton each won for Seeger, who will play Benton Central for the sectional title today. Benton Central defeated Covington 5-0 in the other semifinal.

DACC 2


SPRINGFIELD — The Jaguars were up 2-1 before the Loggers scored two runs in the sixth and seventh innings to get the win at the Region 24 Tournament.

Mark Keller and Caleb Etchison each had one RBI for DACC while Mike Walker had two hits.

The Jaguars will play either Illinois Central College or Lincoln College today in an elimination game at noon.

Illinois leads at regional


FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. — Illini freshman Charlie Danielson had the best round ever for an Illinois player with a 65 for the individual lead as the team overall has the lead in the 14-team NCAA regional.

Danielson leads by two strokes as the Illini are up by three over top-seeded Texas, while Thomas Detry is tied for fourth at 68, Thomas Pieters shot a 72, Brian Campbell had a 77 and Alex Burge shot an 84.

The Illini, coached by Danville native Mike Small, continues action at the regional today.
