LOCAL ROUNDUP: Tigers, Devils out of baseball regionals

TOLONO —  The Westville baseball team was down only 3-0 after the second inning against host Unity in a Class 1A regional game on Wednesday, but the Rockets exploded for 10 runs in the third inning and went on to win 13-1 in five innings.

Aaron Marx had a double and a RBI for the Tigers, who only had three hits, while Christian Jackson added a RBI of his own.

The Tigers end the season 14-11 while Unity will go on to face the winner of today’s game between Oakwood and Monticello for the regional championship on Saturday.

PAXTON — The Spartans jumped out to a nine-run first inning en route to a five-inning win against the Blue Devils.

Clayton Gutteridge had two RBIs for Bismarck-Henning, who had five hits in the game, while Dylan Dodd had one RBI.

The Blue Devils end the season 6-14 while the Spartans will take on the winner of today’s game between St. Thomas More and host Paxton-Buckley-Loda on Saturday for the regional championship.

CHAMPAIGN — Lindsey Loewenstein and Kennedy Richards each had two RBIs as the Vikings easily defeated the Maroons in Big 12 Conference action.

Jeanette Cullum, Megan Cox and Katy Aguirre each had one RBI for Danville, who is 10-16 and 6-4 in the Big 12 and will take on Urbana today.

VEEDERSBURG, Ind. — The Patriots won all five matches against the Mustangs to move on to the semifinals of an IHSAA sectional.

Shelby Brown had the closest singles win for Seeger, beating Katharyn Majors 7-5, 4-6, 6-0 while Miranda Synesael and Kylie Swisher each had two-set wins.

In doubles, Seeger’s Bridget McGowen and Emmie Stevens defeated Fountain Central’s Clare McGrady and Abby Moore 6-3, 6-2 in a rematch from Monday’s Wabash River Conference tournament doubles title match while the team of Becky and Jessi Middleton also won 6-1, 7-5 over Alli Fay and Jordan Lindquist.

The Patriots are still undefeated at 11-0 and will play Attica in a sectional semifinal today with Benton Central and Covington playing the other semi.
