WRC teams excel at sectional

CRAWFORDSVILLE, Ind. —  It may have been the best meet overall in years for the Wabash River Conference schools when their girls swam in the Crawfordsville sectional.

Both Fountain Central and Seeger will be sending swimmers to the state meet while Rockville will have a participant in the diving regional. Attica and North Vermillion also swam well.

 The meet seemed to start well for Fountain Central as they set a school record in finishing second in the 200-medley relay but the foursome was disqualified, as were two other FC relay teams due to an unexplained technicality.

Erin Kay then took second in the 200 free with Shelby Gulley of the Mustangs in fourth and Katie Byrum of North Vermilion in eighth.

Glory Forrest of Rockville followed by taking second in diving to move to the diving-only regional next week.

Becca Haussin won the 100 fly for the Seeger by almost four seconds over the next finisher, but it was a good race for the WRC as Abby Moore took fourth for FC and Madeline Beyer of the Patriots finished sixth.

Clare McGrady set a Fountain Central record in winning the next A-final, the 100 free, in 55.04 to eclipse a record she set earlier this season. Jordan Haddock of Seeger was fifth in the same race.

Seeger won the 200 free relay as they cut almost two seconds off a 15-year old school record with a time of 1:44.81. That means that Haddock, Beyer and Kay will join Haussin, who anchored the relay, in heading to the state meet.

Patriot coach Chance Hurt did not expect to see a record time, saying, “I’m a pessimist, so I was thinking about maybe a 1:47, so the 1:44 was great. I don’t know if Seeger has ever sent a sprint relay team to the state.”

Haddock added, “It was our goal all year to reach state,” and then Haussin chipped in, “But we really wanted to get revenge on FC for beating us at the WRC.”

Byrum of North Vermillion set a school record in finishing second in the 100 back with a time of 1:06.55. Hannah Gaylor and Abby Moore, two freshmen at FC, took fifth and eighth, respectively.

McGrady then came back and broke another school record, this one 17 years old, in the 100 breast, finishing in a time of 1:10.52.

Joining her on the podium were Kay in third and freshman Sarah Emerick of Attica who took fifth.

The Ramblers had two swimmers in the A-finals, Emerick and Zoe Jordan in the 500 free, as well as their medley relay team. It was the first time in several years that Attica had anyone in an A-final.

“We’re happy and the team is happy,” said Attica assistant coach Morgan Piper about the meet. Head coach Dale Peterson gave credit to a developing confidence by the team, saying, “I think doing well in the WRC and bi-county meets helped us in this one.”

The Patriot foursome that had already qualified for state in the sprint (200 free) relay tried to do it again in the 400-free relay that closed the meet, but they took second behind Twin Lakes, the overall team sectional champion.

Seeger was fourth, behind Crawfordsville and South Vermillion. Fountain Central took seventh, Attica was 10th while North Vermillion was 12th and Rockville finished 13th.

Despite the disqualifications to his relay teams, Fountain Central coach John McClure was upbeat.

“It was an amazing day and a strange one, “he said. “We broke records and had personal bests. We had both young swimmers and upperclassmen do well. If we look to next year, Twin Lakes and Crawfordsville lose a lot, so we may be one of the top schools here next year.”
