Illinois senior tournament set to head to Champaign

DANVILLE — The Illinois State Senior Tournament is being held right in our backyard this year. Dates are Oct. 27-28, Nov. 3-4, and Nov. 10-11 and will be held at Western Bowl in Champaign.

You must be 50 years of age or older to be eligible to participate. Just found out the reservation date closed on Sep. 25, but they may take walk ins. There will be several Danville seniors bowling on Nov. 10-11.

No official word yet on what the final outcome is of the recent local associations vote. They are looking into whether the vote to raise the local dues from $7 to $10 required either a majority or a 2/3 vote of the members present.

Try out the sport

Have you ever tried the sport of bowling? If not, league participation is a great way to do it. It is easy to join and a lot of fun. No experience is required. Can you pick up a bowling ball? If so, you are eligible.

There are leagues for all ages. They range from age 4 and up. I know for a fact there are folks over the age of 80 bowling, so don’t tell me you are too old.

We do not want to hear that you are not good enough. Believe me when I tell you that even experienced or top rollers have their bad days.

Take me for example: I am NOT a high roller by any means, but a couple of weeks ago, I rolled a 98 in the senior league and came right back in the Tuesday Nite Go Getters in the next week with a 91. The Hall of Shame had my name on it. You learn with practice and advice from other bowlers. I have found that most bowlers are always willing to help out when asked. Drop by one of your local bowling centers and inquire on how you can join.

League results

The Monday Nite No-Tappers are still tapping. John Nixon, who averages 138, had top honors for the night — rolling 85 pins over average for a 223. Jimmy Scruggs was not far behind, bowling 69 pins over his 172 average for a 241. Rolling 68 pins over an average of 115 was Lynnse Gondzur with a 183. Pam Jones topped out with 222 — 63 pins over her 159 norm, and Mike Jett hit above 200 — with 58 pins over his average for a 208. Finas Glenn picked up the 5-7 split.

The Tuesday Morning Ladies League should start giving lessons on converting splits. They are a small league, but they don’t do too badly. Laura Baird picked up the 2-7-8, while Barb Smith knocked out the 4-10.

Senior League bowler Greg Miller was the top bowler of the week of those reporting, obtaining a 634 series with games of 210, 211, and a 213. John Ramsey had a 599 with games of 201 and 200. Jim Thomas rolled a 202. In the split department, the Wiliams family converted a couple of good ones. Michelle clipped the 4-7-9, while Aaron showed how to pick up the 5-7. Jim Thomas knocked the elusive 2-4-9-10, and Charlie Graul lassoed the5-10.

Please submit all reports before midnight on Mondays. If you need any more info, drop me a note at

Until next week, let’s have fun and knock ‘em down.
