Time to make a final check for hunting season

The Commercial-News

---- — With the hunting season upon us now is a great time to check on some items you might need. Make sure you purchase a hunting license or combination license as well as all the necessary stamps needed to hunt whatever species you intend to hunt. Don’t forget to purchase the Habitat Stamp which is also needed.

While you are at it be sure you pick up an Illinois Digest of Hunting and Trapping Regulations to update you with all you need to know for the season ahead.

Check your Firearm Owners Identification Card (FOID) to make sure it has not expired. Also be sure you understand what is necessary to transport your firearm in Illinois.

Three statutory codes regulate the possession, transfer, and transportation of firearms - the Criminal Code, the

Wildlife Code, and the Firearm Owner’s Identification Act.

In order to comply with those statutes when transporting a firearm, it must be:

1. broken down in a non-functioning state; or

2. not immediately accessible; or

3. unloaded and enclosed in a case, firearm carrying box, shipping box, or other container by a person who has been issued a currently valid Firearm Owner’s Identification Card

A FOID application can be downloaded from the Illinois State Police web site at www.isp.state.il.us or may be obtained at most retail stores where firearms are sold. Non residents are not required to have an Illinois FOID Card. The FOID Card is NOT a concealed carry permit.

Tidbits

n If my backyard is any indication of what dove hunting is going to be like this fall, it will be a banner year. The doves are eating us out of house and home and every time I step out of the back door during daylight hour 15 to 20 doves burst into flight.

n The activity of the hummingbirds has also picked up around our house and the dominant male waits in hiding for any other hummer to come in to the feeders. He then springs into action and chases the others away. This is a late summer pattern we have watched for years.

n I’ve been in contact with anglers fishing Mill Creek Lake south and west of Paris. The bass are really on down in that lake and now might be a great time to fish this body of water. Contests being held on this lake a producing some very good fish and anglers are commenting on the terrific action going on there.
