---- — WESTVILLE — With an strong performance on the mound and at the plate for Hoopeston Area’s Rylee Martin, the Cornjerkers picked up a 7-4 win over Westville on Friday in Vermilion Valley Conference action.

In the fourth inning, the Cornjerkers got hot and pushed four runs across for a 5-2 lead with timely hitting.

“It was nice to get the timely hits tonight, we have been struggling to do that of late but today we didn’t,” Hoopeston Area Coach John Hardcastle said.

Martin led the offensive attack with three hits and three RBI’s.

“I was trying to keep the ball away from the Tigers because they drive the ball well and I feel I did that today,” Martin said.

She did a nice job of battling the Tigers offense on the mound with nine strikeouts and got the defense to back her and get the tough outs when needed to keep the Tigers off the scoreboard for a big inning.

“We have been struggling of late to get outs when the game was on the line but tonight our team did that and I am proud of their play,” Hardcastle said.

“I feel we didn’t get the hit when we needed it and Hoopeston Area did,” Westville Coach Shawn Skinner said.

Ji’Cee Lacey went 4-for-4 and Krista Smith went 2-for-4 for the Tigers but it just wasn’t enough to pull out a victory. Karena Colunga got the Cornjerkers on the board with a second-inning home run.

Hoopeston Area moves to 9-5 (6-2 in the VVC) and travels to Schlarman Monday while Westville falls to 5-11 (3-8) and plays at Salt Fork on Monday.
