LOCAL ROUNDUP: Dans continue their winning ways

TERRE HAUTE, Ind. — With just two weeks in the regular season, the Danville Dans are marching towards a Prospect League playoff berth.

After Monday’s 3-1 win over the Terre Haute Rex at Bob Warn Field, the Dans (32-13) are just five wins away from clinching a spot in the West Division playoffs.

But, that isn’t the goal this team has set for itself.

“I don’t know what the magic number is and I’m not sure our guys know what the magic number is,’’ said Danville manager Jason Watson. “We’re not looking at just making the playoffs. Our goal is to win the Division title. With the season we are having, we feel that is a very realistic goal for this group. After that, we will look at what we can do in the postseason about winning the whole thing.’’

On Monday night, the theme for Dans was pitching.

Left-hander Troy Conyers, the starting pitcher for the West Division in the 2013 All-Star Game, went five innings, allowing just two hits while walking four and striking out seven.

Conyers improved to 5-0 with the victory and he lowered his ERA to 1.00.

“Troy gave us five very good innings,’’ Watson said. “He got a little hot and we turned it over to the bullpen.

“Evan Dunn, Jacob Hall, Miles Nordgren and Trey McNickle all four went out there and got three outs for us.’’

McNickle, who picked up his seventh save of the summer, allowed an unearned run in the ninth.

Offensively, Danville got just enough with six hits as Sam Maus led the way with a single, a double, a run scored and an RBI.

Also driving home a run on Monday night was Trey Russell, who just joined the team on Friday.

The former Urbana standout and current senior-to-be from Eastern Illinois went 1-for-4 in his first action with the Dans.

“We have a few guys that have been playing quite a bit and they need to take a day off,’’ Watson said. “Trey can do all the things we need from an outfielder. He swings the bat well, he can run down a ball in the gap and he’s got a good arm.’’

Up next for the Dans is a five-game, three-day homestand, starting with a doubleheader tonight against Hannibal. First pitch is set for 6 p.m.

Zach Gordon and Corbin Olmstead are the scheduled starters tonigth for Danville.
