Defense pays off for Pats

VEEDERSBURG, Ind. — It was not pretty, but it was a win for the Seeger Patriots as they defeated Sheridan 31-22 in a game where defenses dominated.

No one could get any flow in their offenses is how Patriot head coach Brent Rademacher explained the low score.

“We couldn’t get any movement against their defense and that what you have to do against what they were play – well, against any defense really,” he explained.

Seeger limited Sheridan to only two points for over seven minutes in the first quarter, and the Patriots only had four until the final few minutes of the period.

It was Kirsten Irvine who finally got things moving for Seeger as she ran off eight straight points in the final two minutes of the period to give the Patriots a 12-4 lead going into the second quarter.

The game then bogged down again as Sheridan managed only six points in the second quarter against just a pair of free throws by Miranda Synesael for Seeger.

After halftime, Seeger seemed eager to up the tempo but their offense just would not click. Individually players would make plays, but a team, the execution just was not there.

Unforced turnovers and one-and-done shots by the Patriots allowed Sheridan to pull within three in the opening minutes of the second half. When the third quarter ended, Seeger held a slim four-point lead at 19-15.

Kiley Swisher scored for Seeger as the fourth quarter began and Irvine forced a Blackhawk turnover by taking a charge. She then took off down the floor for a lay-up that forced a Sheridan time out.

The break may have helped Seeger more than it did Sheridan as it allowed Rademacher to put his team into a delay game where everyone moved and looked for an easy basket.

Up six, the Patriots ran off over two and a half minutes before making a mistake in their offense and turning the ball over.

Seeger continued to work time, got an open look for Synesael and, with two minutes left and a six-point lead, forced Sheridan into trying to foul their way back into the game.

That tactic failed as Seeger hit six of eight free throws to close down the half and take the 31-22 win.

Rademacher said his team was in the same offense that he used to run time off the clock earlier in the game, but his team did not move and it was not effective.

“We got the win and that’s what matters,” is all he would say to summarize the game. “We play again.”
