LOCAL ROUNDUP: Hilltopper girls rally to defeat Mustangs

DANVILLE —  After a tough second quarter which saw it down 25-15 at halftime, the Schlarman girls basketball team rallied in the second half of Saturday’s game with Fountain Central to come away with the 53-47 victory.

Holly Huckstadt hit six 3-pointers for the Hilltoppers, the second straight game she had reached that mark, to lead the team with 18 points, Janelle Marion and Sierra Bell each had 12 while Ella Black added five.

Linley Smith had 18 points to lead Fountain Central while Mackenzie Hurd had nine, Tayler Louthen had eight and Samantha Pigg added six.

The Hilltoppers are 10-9 and will return to Vermilion Valley Conference action on Monday when they face Salt Fork. Fountain Central will play Covington in Wabash River Conference action on Tuesday.

NORMAL — The Vikings had a 28-24 lead at halftime, but only scored 10 points in the second half as they lost to the Wildcats.

Michaela Jones and Jade Carter each had nine points for Danville while Alexus Jimson-Miller and Breanna Keys each had eight and Lynette Buggs added four.

The Vikings will play Champaign Central on Thursday.

CISSNA PARK — Austin Calhoun had 10 points, but it was not enough as the Hilltoppers lost to Cissna Park on the road.

Chris Kuchefski had seven and Michael Simmons had five for Schlarman, who drops to 12-6 and will return to Vermilion Valley Conference action Tuesday against Chrisman.

CLINTON, Ind. — Zach Stitt had 14 points as the Patriots put together a balanced effort to defeat South Vermillion.

Caleb Orahood had 13 points with six rebounds for Seeger, while Borden Kennedy had 12 and Jordan Stover had eight points, seven assists and six rebounds.

The Patriots are 8-3 and will play Southmont on Friday.

SHERIDAN, Ind. — Luke Davenport, Sam Woodrow and Ethan Woodrow each had 10 points, but it was not enough as the Mustangs lost on the road.

Koby Pierce had eight points while Michael Duane added six for Fountain Central, who drops to 8-2 and will face South Vermillion on Friday.

Cornjerkers compete at Hawk Classic


FAIRBURY — Devin Cartwright (106 pounds), Gage Foster (132) and Ethan Linder (285) each took fourth as Hoopeston Area ended up 11th out of 15 teams at the Hawk Classic at Prairie Central High School

Josh Johnson (120) was fifth and Jacob Varns (195) was sixth for the Cornjerkers.

Covington fourth at South Vermillion

CLINTON, Ind. — Karson Allen won the 195 pound title and the Outstanding Wrestler Award at the South Vermillion Tournament for the Trojans.

Allen goes to 15-1 with the win, while teammate Dalton Hardy remained undefeated at 16-0 after winning the 220 title.

Wyatt Kinderman (152) and Garrett Reynolds (285) took second for Covington, who was fourth in the tournament, while Noah Navarre (106) and Nick Ratcliff (182) took third and Coty Coon (138) was fourth.

North Vermillion was also in the tournament and took fifth,

Crawfordsville tourney


CRAWFORDSVILLE, Ind. — Taylor Hanthorne won the 120 pound title for the Patriots, as they took fifth at the Athenian Tournament.

Quentin Johnston (106) and Jordan Horath (152) took second for Seeger, while Frank Briddick (285) was third, Jamie Stump (126) and Devon Harris (182) was fourth and Zach Hunter (160) and Chance Billingsley (195) each took fifth.

Fountain Central was also at the tournament and took sixth with a team score of 124.

The Patriots will wrestle Lafayette Harrison on Tuesday.
