---- — TILTON — The Danville Legion Post 210 Speakers played host to Crawfordsville Byron Cox Post 72 on Monday night in Tilton.

Danville dug themselves an early hole against Crawfordsville and in a seven-inning contest wasn’t able to come all the way back, falling 6-5.

The Speakers battled back, scoring runs in the final four innings, but they couldn’t rally for the victory.

“I am proud of how we didn’t give up and how we had the winning run at the plate,’’ said Danville Post 210 manager Allan Shepherd.

The Speakers had the winning run at the plate twice in the bottom of the seventh, but Crawfordsville closer Jake Haste struck out the last two batters to get the save.

“We played a solid game and played a good team to gauge where we are at,’’ Shepherd said. “We just didn’t get our bats going early enough.”

Crawfordsville, who finished third in last year’s Indiana state legion finals, came out and was patient at the plate and jumped on Danville early with three runs in the second inning.

“Offensively we want to force the issue with guys on and keep pounding at the plate to put pressure on the other teams pitching,’’ said Crawfordsville coach John Pickett.

Crawfordsville brings back 10 players from last year’s team and four players with college experience.

Danville threw its young pitching arms tonight against Crawfordsville to see how they would react to facing a very good team. Danville used Kyle Girton, Austin Milholland, and Dalton Strawser. Each pitcher struggled some with the strike zone tonight as the disciplined hitters from Crawfordsville would not chase the close pitches.

“We made some mistakes and walked too many people but they have a good team and it was a learning situation for our young pitchers,” Shepherd said.

Austin West and Mark Strebin led the Danville offense with two hits each and West had a team-high two RBIs for the Post 210 Speakers.

Up next for the Speakers is a road game on Thursday in Tuscola against the Moultrie County-Douglas County team. First pitch is set for 6 p.m.
