Bearcats go on the road to face juggernaut

---- — MILFORD — The Milford/Cissna Park football team has been on a roll as of late, scoring at least 50 points in its last two games.

“Our offense has been very good as of late,” Bearcats coach Clint Schwartz said. “After the Attica game (a 21-14 loss), we were put in a playoff situation in a way because we had to win our last two games just to make it.”

But in Friday’s Class 1A state playoff game, the Bearcats will be on the road against today undefeated Ottawa Marquette, who have scored at least 40 points in all but one game.

“We finally saw some tape on them and they remind me of Bismarck,” Schwartz said. “They are not as great as runners as Bismarck, they can still put up a lot of points.”

With a 5-4 record, the Bearcats achieved one of their goals for the season, but Schwartz said there was an add-on to that goal.

“We met in July to come up with some goals and we read them this week,” Schwartz said. “Along with making the playoffs, we want to get past the first round.

“Even if we don’t win on Friday, we still made the playoffs and that was something a lot of teams did not do.”

On defense, a change in alignment have been the key for some improvement for MCP.

“Earlier in the season, we did a 3-5 defense but we moved to a 4-4 in the middle of the season,” Schwartz said. “We have done very well with that defense and we hope it continues on Monday.”

Also, Schwartz hopes the play of Jacob and Josh Marquez will also continue to go big for the team. Jacob Marquez passed for five touchdowns against Oakwood/Armstrong-Potomac with three of them to Josh Marquez. Josh Marquez ran for two touchdowns while Jacob Marquez passed for one in the team’s win over Hoopeston Area.

“There is something between them and it is more than them just playing catch,” Schwartz said. “Josh is the heart and soul of the team and he is just one of those players that has that talent that you just can’t coach, it is already there.”

The Bearcats and Ottawa Marquette will start play at 7 p.m.
