LOCAL ROUNDUP: Dans fall in extra innings

TERRE HAUTE, Ind. — The extra inning magic for the Danville Dans came to end on Sunday.

The Terre Haute Rex scored in the bottom of the 11th to beat the Dans 3-2, snapping Danville’s five-game winning streak — four of those wins came in extra innings.

“Yeah, this time we couldn’t get it done in extra innings,’’ said Danville coach Jason Watson, who was actually serving a suspension on Sunday. “But, we still played well and the kids really battled.’’

Danville starter Blake Stevens, making his debut with the Dans, went six innings, allowing just one run while walking none and striking out four.

“That was a great first game for Blake,’’ Watson said. “We just couldn’t get the timely hits like we’ve done in the previous five victories.’’

The Dans tied the game at 1-1 with a run-scoring hit by Tyler Selesky in the fourth inning.

Three innings later, Terre Haute took a 2-1 lead but Danville scored one in the ninth on a sacrifice fly by pinch-hitter Chad Klein to force extra innings.

It is the sixth extra-inning game already this season for the Dans, who are now 5-1 in games that go past regulation.

And while playing 26 innings in about 26 hours wasn’t easy for Danville (9-6), the situation was a little tougher when three pitchers (Evan Dunn, Mitch Holtz and Trey McNickle) were ejected in the second inning for violating the National Anthem Standoff Rule in the Prospect League.

“We had three guys still standing down in the bullpen at the start of the second inning,’’ Watson said. “That’s against the rules, and they were ejected.’’

All three players will be suspended for tonight’s game in Hannibal.

“Hopefully, we can keep playing well and get through this game without those players,’’ Watson said.

That wasn’t the only problem for the Dans on Sunday as the game was delayed by 30 minutes because Danville misread the schedule start time of the game at Bob Warn Field.

Tonight’s game in Hannibal, Mo., is set for 7:05 p.m. start.

DANVILLE — Future Eastern Illinois University pitcher Chase Thurston struck out nine in seven innings to lead the Post 210 Speakers to a victory.

Danville (10-3) had three players, Nick Shepherd, Jordan West and Jeff Woods, with two hits on Sunday, while Shepherd and Woods each drove home a run. Also getting an RBI for Post 210 was Austin Calhoun.

Relief pitcher Adam DePratt got into a little trouble in the ninth but Kyle Coburn came on to get the final out.

The Speakers are back in action tonight at Danville Stadium with a 6 p.m. contest against a team from Clinton, Ind.

Danville Post 210 also swept a junior legion on doubleheader on Sunday from Lincoln.

The Junior Speakers are also in action tonight with a doubleheader against Rantoul begining at 6 p.m.
