LOCAL ROUNDUP: Danville breaks out of losing slump

DANVILLE —  After 10 games and about two months of tough losses, the Danville boys basketball team broke through on Friday with a 51-47 win over Decatur Eisenhower in Big 12 Conference action for its first win since Nov. 30.

“It has been a long drought, but we have had some close games,” Danville coach Ted Houpt said. “This game was close as well because they hit four 3-pointers near the end, but we hit our free throws and did not turn the ball over.”

Marcus Merriweather, coming off a one-game suspension, and Denzel Smith each scored 18 points for the Vikings while Kylen Butler added four.

“(Merriweather) was 7-of-8 from the line and he made some key plays,” Houpt said. “So it was great to see him back. Steven Williams also had a good game for us and it was great to have both of them on the court.”

The Vikings are 3-14 and will try to stay on the winning track Monday at the Joliet shootout against Chicago Heights Bloom.

“They were a team that was fourth in state last year and that is who we have to put that winning streak against,” Houpt said. ‘But we have played some good teams this season and I hope we can pull the upset.”

Danville will return home on Tuesday to play Urbana in Big 12 action.
