It took Attica only one play to score when they got the ball back, a pass from Sheridan to Tyler Campbell good for 79 yards and a touchdown. The extra point was wide, but it was 34-0.
Sheridan and Campbell would later combine on another touchdown throw, this one for 49 yards, to put the Ramblers up 41-0 at the half.
With such a lead, some fans were calling out that Attica should play their JV squad rather than let their varsity score another touchdown – a 36-yard run by Sheridan.
The answer came from Covington coach Travis Brown.
“In a game like this, we’d all like to put in our JV, but we can’t,” he said. “If we do, they play too many quarters and can’t play on Monday [the night of the JV contests]. We just don’t have enough players to be able to do that.”
Attica would go on to score three more times, including a 66-yard run by Davis after he bobbled a punt snap.
“That was just one more thing that you don’t expect,” said Brown of the touchdown. “Some nights are just like that.”
Brown gave credit to Attica, saying, “They are a good team,” but also had good words for his own team despite the outcome.
“We lost Tanner Jumps early in the game and another player had his grandfather pass away today so he wasn’t eve here,” he said. “We played four freshmen a lot in the first half, not just the second.
“Our young guys stepped up – I don’t want to name them in case I forget somebody – but they came in and played hard.”
Brown says his team is still upbeat.
“They need to be,” he said. “We’ve got some winnable games coming up, but those teams will be hungry for a win, too. So we’ve got to keep positive and keep working on getting better.”
