Young Vikings no match for Raiders at home

DANVILLE — The Danville volleyball team started a very young team with one senior, four sophomores, and one freshman against a tough, older Bloomington team who showed more consistent play.

In the end, the Lady Raiders defeated the Lady Vikings 25-4 and 25-9.

Where Danville had the most success in the match was with its serving. The Lady Vikings did not miss a serve.

“We served the ball well tonight and had four aces against one of the top teams in the conference,” Danville coach Cathy Wenthe said. “The team followed the game plan with serving aggressive against the Lady Raiders.”

Unfortunately for the Lady Vikings, the Lady Raiders put together some good serving of their own and had several scoring runs that spelled the end for the Lady Vikings.

“I think we can play harder and that we didn’t play to the best of our ability tonight,” sophomore setter Alexis Hoskins said, “I think the team will put it together and play harder and better on Saturday.”

Down 1-0 in the match, Danville started strong in game 2 with a 3-1 lead with some good serving and nice hitting, but Bloomington fought back and took the lead on a 5-point run to lead 6-3.

With the score 10-5 in favor of the Lady Raiders, Bloomington tried to put game two away with a 12-point run but the Lady Vikings stopped the run with a nice rally.

The Lady Vikings continue to fight hard with a four-point run of their own, but it was not enough as the Raiders won game two 25-9.

In game 1, the Vikings couldn’t stay away from Bloomington putting together several big runs. The Lady Raiders finished game one with an eight point run to win the game by the score 25-4.

“We are young and building towards more consistent and better play throughout the rest of the season,” Wenthe said.

The Lady Vikings will return to action on Saturday, where they will join Armstrong-Potomac, Hoopeston Area and Salt Fork at the Watseka Invitational.
