DYFL ends season with Super Bowl

DANVILLE — The Wayland-Young Athletic Complex hosted the Danville Youth Football League Super Bowl for the first time on Saturday.

In the Varsity game between the Carver Bears and Garfield Ravens, with the Ravens putting the game out of reach during the 4th quarter.

The first half was a defensive struggle with the Ravens leading 8-0 on a hard touchdown run and conversion. The Bears scored on a 1-yard plunge after a long pass play in the 3rd quarter to make the score 8-6.

That was as close as the Bears could get as the Ravens showed their muscles and scored on a quarterback keeper and then a got another quick score after recovering a fumble, which ran the score to 24-6 within a few minutes on the clock.

Henry Graham scored on a long TD run and on his way into the end zone runs over several bear players to make the score 30-6.

“This is a special group of players, the team was very disciplined throughout the year and they were easy to coach,” Ravens coach Edgar Davis said.

Later in the 4th quarter, the Ravens finished out the scoring with Graham's run and another long touchdown run to win the game 36-6.

The coaches of the youth programs agreed with each other on what the players can do not only for the league, but for Danville High's football team in the future.

“They played a real fine game and the Vikings high school team will have a very good group of freshmen next year," Davis said.

“The Vikings' future is a bright one, especially if all the players continue to develop in a way that will improve the program,” Bears coach J.R. Scruggs said.

The Bears program was in each class of the Super Bowl.

“The Bears players are not allowed to participate if they do not make the grades," Scruggs said.“I really hope the high school will continue to allow the DYFL to use the field for future Super Bowls.”
