The Commercial-News

---- — WESTVILLE — On Homecoming night in Westville, the Tigers came out and played well all night and ended up with a 42-14 victory over Milford/Cissna Park for their first win of the season.

“It was a very nice homecoming tonight the team played hard and it was nice to play on the home field for homecoming in front of a big crowd.” Westville coach Guy Goodlove said, “Nobody quit and we maintained a positive outlook throughout the losing streak.”

Kyle Brazas started the scoring for Westville with a short TD plunge to take a 7-0 lead in the first quarter. Milford came right back with a long 55-yard TD run from Devon Laubscher to tie the game 7-7.

In the second quarter Westville flexed their muscles with two scoring strikes, a 25-yard TD pass from Brazas to Jeff Thompson, who also scored on 28-yard run made the halftime score 21-7.

“We came out and fought hard tonight,” Thompson said, “As a team we still feel we can make the playoffs if we continue to play as well as we did tonight. I thought a lot of people had to step up especially me because of Tanner Cox being out and we did.”

The Tigers took the first position of the second half and marched down the field and it was completed with a Thompson 27-yard run to give the Tigers a 28-7 lead.

“We came in with a good game plan and executed it very well,” Goodlove said. “We won the line of scrimmage and that’s what we have been working on. Our line really played well tonight.”

As Milford was marching down the field to try to mount a comeback, Westville’s LaDavion Severado had an interception to halt the drive.

“We had our opportunities but shot ourselves in the foot with turnovers,” MCP coach Clint Schwartz said.

Dalton Hilligoss would run for a 52-yard TD run to make the score 35-7.

As the 4th quarter ran down, a late Tiger fumble recovery led to the Tigers’ final score. A play later, the Bearcats scored on a 60-yard TD pass to Josh Marquez to round out the scoring.

“They were tougher up front then we were they played more physical,” Schwartz said. “We will go to work to play hard and well next week.”
