DACC women fall to Parkland

CHAMPAIGN — The Danville Area Community College Lady Jaguars spent all Wednesday night trying to run uphill.

Ultimately, the Lady Jaguars ran out gas and out of time as they fell to the Parkland Cobras 76-64 in a Mid-West Athletic Conference women’s basketball game at the Dodds Recreation Complex.

“We would get close, call a timeout and we made it clear that we had to string a few a few more stops together,’’ DACC coach Kyle Bent said. “We just don’t stop the bleeding soon enough. We don’t have the depth to get down double-digits and claw our way back.’’

DACC, which fell to 16-7 overall and 3-1 in the M-WAC, got as close as 46-43 and 54-51 in the second half but Parkland responded each time with second-chance points.

“Their ability to rebound on the offensive end, we just didn’t get enough defensive stops,’’ Bent said. “We did a good job of playing for 20-25 seconds, but the possession isn’t over.

“We can be pretty good for 20 seconds, but if they get two or three shots, it’s tough to play with that intensity for a full minute.’’

Parkland, which improved to 16-6 overall and 3-1 in the M-WAC, had 15 offensive rebounds which led directly to 14 second-chance points for the Cobras, who outrebounded the Jaguars 43-32.

“I thought our kids stayed with it,’’ Parkland coach Carrie Redeker said. “They hit a lot of 3s and kept trying to come back. I thought our conditioning was a difference. I think they got a little tired and that helped us on the boards.’’

Each DACC comeback in the second half seemed to be fueled by the 3-point shot as the Jaguars were 12-of-30 behind the arc in the contest. Kamaren Cole scored 12 of her game-high 20 points in the second half and she finished the game with five 3-pointers.

“We have some girls that can get hot. They are all pretty streaky,’’ Bent said. “It can keep us in games, but it can also shoot us out of games.

“I think we took some shots too early in the possession and that cost us some points, especially in the first half.’’

Bent said the 3-pointer is becoming a bigger part of the DACC offense because of the injuries his team has suffered this season. The Lady Jaguars had only eight players dressed for the game against the Cobras.

“We’ve had to change a few things with all the injuries and stuff,’’ Bent said. “We are going to have to use the 3 more to keep us in game. I thought we fell into a groove of shooting too many 3s.’’

Hilary Lively, the leading scorer for the Jaguars at 12.6 points per game, was held to just six points but the sophomore standout from North Vermillion had a team-high nine rebounds.

“I thought our kids pushed her out in the post,’’ Redeker said. “A lot of her points come off of offensive rebounds and we were able to push her out.

“We also always had someone fresh on her. Our kids with their energy set the tone for keeping her contained.’’

Parkland had three players in double figures with Lindsay Lenon leading the way with 18, followed by Lexie Taylor with 13 and Uzuri Williams had 11. Taylor also had a game-high eight assists for the Cobras.

DACC also had three players in double digits, after Cole’s 20, Stephanie Lord had 15 and Megan Hiner finished with 11.

DACC returns to the Mary Miller Gymnasium on Saturday for a 4 p.m. Mid-West Athletic Conference contest against the Lincoln College Lynx.
