DANVILLE — The biggest winner this week in local sports is Winter Storm Ion.
All five Vermilion Valley Conference girls basketball games scheduled for Monday night were postponed because of the brutal weather conditions that forced all area schools to be cancelled.
Additionally, seven more basketball games scheduled for tonight, five Vermilion Valley Conference boys games and two games in girls basketball featuring Wabash River Conference teams have already been postponed.
The only game that is still tentatively planned for tonight is the Danville High boys basketball game at Champaign Centennial. Tipoff for the Big 12 Conference contest is set for 6 p.m. for the junior varsity and the varsity game will tentatively start around 7:30 p.m.
Centennial (11-4) won the previous matchup between the teams. Michael Finke, who signed this fall to play next year at Illinois, had a double-double as the Chargers defeated the Vikings 69-58. Danville is 4-8 after going 1-2 at the Pontiac Holiday Tournament.
Two of the postponed games from tonight, Schlarman Academy at Hoopeston Area and Oakwood at Georgetown-Ridge Farm, are tentatively re-scheduled for Wednesday. The JV games will begin at 6 p.m. with the varsity contests starting around 7:30 p.m.
