Seeger hits the ground running

WEST LEBANON, Ind. — In 2012 the Seeger Patriots were smack dab in the middle of the Wabash River Conference Standings.

They went 4-3 in the conference games beating the four teams ranked below them, and they lost to the three teams above them.

This fall the Patriots look to climb out of the middle and back on top of the WRC standings, and they’re going to do it with old school football.

“We’re going to be a very methodical team,” Seeger coach Tom Cook said. “We don’t have a lot of speed or explosiveness so we’re going to run it right at them. Think Woody Hayes style of football. Three yards here, four yards there and just pound the run.’’

Seeger’s strategy will likely be a successful one with their big offensive line and the strong rotation of running backs.

Seniors Zack Latoz, Jack Kay and Frank Briddick and Junior Patrick Hegg are all returning starters. Devin Harris will join the bunch as a sophomore.

The Seeger offense will also feature a tight end. This year it will be a familiar face but at a different position as last season’s quarterback Cole Blessing moves up to the line.

“He did a fine job there last year, but really this is a better position for him” Cook said.

The quarterback vacancy will be filled by senior Jake Fell who had left football earlier in his high school career but is returning for his last year of high school.

Running the ball, coach Cook believes he has four strong options and all of them will share the duty. They are Trevor Bowlus, Aidan Hoskins, Jacob Halsema and last year’s leading rusher Tyler Munson.

In 2012, Munson, Bowlus and Hoskins all combined for over 1,000 yards rushing. Munson led the pack with 782 yards with 10 touchdowns, Bowlus followed with 561 yards and 2 TDs and Hoskins had 223 yards with 3 TDs.

“They’ve been working hard and the running game looked pretty effective at our scrimmage.'’ Cook said. "Our fullback will be Bowlus and Munson and Hoskins will be the two wing backs with Halsema rotating in. They’ve done a good job and have been rotating around so each guy knows each position.''

On defense the Patriots return six starters: Blessing, Hegg and Briddick on the line, and linebackers Munson, Kay and Bowlus. The secondary will be filled with new starters.

While there are many returning faces Cook has noticed a different feel to the 2013 Patriots.

"The kids have been playing with more emotion which is something I think we lacked the last few years.” Cook said. "The kids are playing with more intensity, celebrating together as a team and that’s really

come out at practice and our scrimmage.''

Cook has also been impressed with his student-athletes commitment this summer with exceptional weight room and conditioning attendance.

“Almost the entire group has had been 80 to 100 percent attendance in the weight room.” Cook said.

One other change for the Seeger Patriots in 2013 will be the returning to Class 1A for the postseason tournament. The past two seasons, Seeger has lost to Benton Central and Tipton in the first-round of the sectional tournament.

This year, the Patriots will be in Class 1A, Sectional 42 for the postseason along with Carroll, Caston, Frontier, North White, Pioneer, South Newton and Tri-County.

The Patriots will begin the season on the road against the Rockville Rox this Friday night. Their home opener will be on Aug. 30 against the Benton Central Bison.

Other home games for the Patriots include Covington on Sept. 20, Turkey Run on Oct. 4 and West Lafayette on Oct. 11.
