The Danville baseball team took things to the outdoors for only the second time this spring, and it seemed like there were in mid-season form.
Chase Thurston had six strikeouts with no walks as the Vikings defeated Springfield 2-1 in their season opener.
“It was nice to go out and see some action,” Danville coach Gary Gritton said. “We just went outside for a practice before today and it was good to see the pitchers challenging all of the hitters.”
Mike Vascura got the save, taking down Springfield in the seventh inning.
On offense, Chuckie Robinson provided all of it, hitting a 2-RBI triple in the third.
“Chuckie got the big hit and that is something that we are going to expect from him as this season goes on,” Gritton said.
The Vikings will stay in Jacksonville today to play Geneva.
Villa Grove 12
BISMARCK — Elijah Aspell drove in the game-winning RBI as the Bismarck-Henning baseball team rallied to win its season opener 13-12 over Villa Grove on Friday.
Austin Reinken, like Aspell, had two RBIs and had the game-tying RBI, Chase Swinford had three RBIs, Patrick Ganley had two and Kane Richmond added one.
Dylan Bott got the win for the Blue Devils, who are will face Unity on Monday.
Hoopeston Area 8
HOOPESTON — Connor Cline got the win on the mound and had two hits and three RBIs for the Cornjerkers as they defeated the Trojans.
Kendal Walder had two RBIs for Hoopeston Area, while Andrew Samet had two hits.
St. Joe-Ogden 3
ST. JOSEPH — The Tigers could only get three hits as they lost their opener to the Spartans.
Dillon Turner took the loss for Westville while Aaron Marx, Austin Milholland and Jordan Romo each had one hit.
The Tigers will try to rebound today against Tuscola.
Hoopeston Area 6
HOOPESTON — Megan Cain and Makenzie Vinson each had two RBIs as the Trojans rallied in the last two innings to defeat the Cornjerkers.
Morgan Zindars got the win for Armstrong-Potomac, who won despite only getting five hits.
Allison Hamilton had two RBIs for Hoopeston Area, who had 14 hits, but had five errors and left 10 on base, while Karena Colunga, Jordan McFadden, Kaelynn Longfellow and Rylee Martin each had one.
The Cornjerkers are 0-1 and will face Champaign Central today.
