LOCAL ROUNDUP: Speakers sweep up at home

DANVILLE —  Danville Post 210 baseball team coach Allan Shepherd was looking for some defense to back up the strong pitching the Speakers have been doing all season so far.

On Saturday, he got that strong defense as the Speakers did not commit an error in a doubleheader sweep of Charleston 10-0 and 11-1.

“We hadn’t had an errorless game before today, so it was good to see two errorless games,” Shepherd said. “If we can keep playing defense like that, we will do so much better as a team.”

The Post 210 pitching was solid with Jake England giving up only two hits in the first game and Conor Jarling giving up three in the second. England had six strikeouts and Jarling had two.

“It was his first game pitching and he only needed 82 pitches,” Shepherd said.

On offense, the Speakers had 20 hits for both five-inning games, with Chase Thurston getting four RBIs for the day, while Nick Woods had three, England, Kody Zumwalt and Austin Calhoun each had two and Zach Girton and Austin West each had one.

The Speakers are 6-2 and will face Rantoul today in a doubleheader at Danville Stadium.

Hummer fourth, Palmer first at run

DANVILLE — Danville High School runner Caleb Hummer took fourth overall in the men while Danville’s Andrea Palmer was first overall for women at the Lake Mingo Trail Run at Kennekuk State Park.

Hummer ran the 7.1 mile course in 46 minutes, 53 seconds while Palmer finished in 53:30.

Dans sweep Sliders

SPRINGFIELD — A good bullpen is more valuable when a team can get a victory.

That was the case in day/night doubleheader at Robin Roberts Field in Springfield.

Danville’s bullpen tossed eight shutout innings of relief as the Dans swept the twinbill from the Springfield Sliders by identical 3-1 scores.

“We’re very confident in the guys that we have in our bullpen,’’ Danville Dans coach Jason Watson said. “The big thing is that we haven’t been able to get them into many games with a lead.

“Both of our starters went five strong innings and then we turned it over to the bullpen.’’

Cody Carroll got the victory in the first game, while Matt Brandys got the honor in the second contest.

In the opener, Carroll was followed by Jon Rashid, Miles Nordgren and Trey McNickle, who picked up his first save.

In the second game, after Brandys was Jared Burton, Mitch Holtz and Corbin Olmstead got his first save.

“Now, that we have all of our pitchers in town, we are trying to develop a good bullpen rotation,’’ Watson said.

Spencer Herrmann and Sam Maus each had two hits and an RBI in the first game for the Dans, while Jake Thomas had two hits and two RBIs in the second game victory.

The biggest concern for Danville was how to spend the four hours between the end of the first game and the start of the second game.

“We spent our time at the mall,’’ said Watson, who saw his team improve to 4-4 with the sweep.

“Our No. 1 priority is to help these players get better,’’ he said. “But, of course, everyone on this team wants to win as much as we can.’’

The Danville Dans will continue their six-game road trip with a doubleheader tonight in Quincy. First pitch is set for 5:35 p.m.

Nine more Dans drafted on Saturday

DANVILLE — Austin Green, who played for the Danville Dans in 2009 and 2010, was the first of nine former Dans to be drafted on Saturday.

Green, who played college baseball at the University of San Diego, was a 13th-round selection (Pick No. 396) of the Detroit Tigers.

Joining Green from the 2009 squad to be drafted on Saturday was Ole Miss relief pitcher Brett Huber, chosen in the 31st round (Pick No. 936) also by the Detroit Tigers, and Virginia Commonwealth infielder Cody Yount, chosen in the 37th round (Pick No. 1,113) by the Chicago White Sox.

No one else from the 2010 team was chosen on Saturday, but five players from the 2011 Danville Dans did get the call.

Leading the way was Mississippi State pitcher Evan Mitchell, chosen by the Cincinnati Reds in the 13th round (Pick No. 405). University of San Diego pitcher Michael Wagner was chosen by the Chicago Cubs in the 15th round (Pick No. 438). Next came Pepperdine pitcher Michael Swanner chosen in the 16th round (Pick No. 493) by the Atlanta Braves. Then came St. Leo catcher Daniel Torres, chosen in the 20th round (Pick No. 597) by the Seattle Mariners and rounding out the selections from the 2011 Danville Dans was Maryland outfielder Charlie White, a 29th-round selection (Pick No. 884) of the New York Yankees.

And the only selection from the 2012 Danville Dans was Max Homick from the University of San Diego. Homick, a pitcher/infielder, was taken in the 32nd round (Pick No. 963) for the Baltimore Orioles.

Those nine players join Mason Katz, Nick Rumbelow and Chad Girodo as former Danville Dans taken in the 2013 MLB Draft.

Danville’s Robinson does not get drafted

DANVILLE — Danville catcher Chuckie Robinson did not get a call on Saturday.

The former Viking standout, who was scouted on multiple occasions this season by professional scouts, was not selected during the 40-round MLB Draft.

Robinson is now expected to fulfill his commitment to the University of Southern Mississippi.
