Tilton duo wins tourney

DANVILLE — Fishing for rough fish with a bow and arrow has been a sport for a long time but today it is increasing in popularity and provides a way to remove rough fish from a body of water.

This past weekend, the Illinois Bowfishers held their ninth Annual State Bowfishing tournament at Lake Shelbyville. The tournament was held from 7 p.m. Saturday evening until 7 a.m. Sunday morning and was sanctioned by the Bowfishing Association of America.

There were 11 boats with 44 competitors from Utah, Indiana and Illinois. The tournament had a 20-fish format. Regardless of the fish shot, only 20 were allowed to be weighed.

Only rough fish are allowed; common carp, gar and buffalo. A shooter needed seven of one species, seven of another species and six from third species totaling 20 fish. A cash prize was given for the largest fish shot.

The winning First Place team of Bill Kingore of Tilton and John Borgers from Danville had a total weight of 114 pounds/ The team also won the big fish award with a 23.12 pound buffalo. Second place came in with a total of 86.2 pounds and the third place finishers had 77.2 pounds. There was a total of 592 pounds of rough fish removed and disposed of by the Army Corp. of Engineers.

Reminders

There are still some rabbits nests out there as I marked several yesterday as I was mowing. Please be careful when you are mowing as our rabbit population could sure use a boost.

This year’s National Meet of the National Fishing Lure Collectors Club (NFLCC) will be held in Kansas City, Missouri on July 11-13. If you are a collector and have never attended a National Meet, you owe it to yourself to attend one. My wife and I have made the last 15 and the amount of tackle, both vintage and newer is unbelievable. The main hotel is booked but there are two other hotels in close proximity that still have rooms. If you need more information please send me an e-mail,
