NORMAL — If Friday’s game with Normal West showed anything, it showed that the Danville boys basketball team is ready for the IHSA Class 4A playoffs.
The Vikings got a 38-36 win in overtime against the Wildcats, who they will face again in Monday’s first round.
“This was a great win to end the regular season,” Danville coach Ted Houpt said. “This had a playoff feel and I felt that we wanted it more than they did.
“This was the first time in a long time since we beat a team in Normal, so it was good to come in and get the win.”
The Vikings were up 37-36 late in the overtime period and sealed it when Victor Askew got a steal off an inbounds pass.
“He just jumped out and got the steal,” Houpt said. “Victor has done a great job for us this season and we would not have gone anywhere without him.”
Denzel Smith had 16 points and 10 rebounds for Danville while Kylen Butler added nine.
The Vikings are 9-16 and ended up 5-11 in the Big 12 Conference and will take on Normal West again on Monday in regional play.
“It will be a game like it was tonight,” Houpt said. “It will be a grind and it will be competitive throughout.”
