CHAMPAIGN — When the 100-yard freestyle final of a IHSA sectional started, not many had Danville’s Tristan Wolfe near the top.
But Wolfe made quick work of the doubters, winning the event with a time of 49.95 seconds and advanced to next week’s state meet.
“It was awesome to see,” Danville coach Carl Long said. “He led all of the way and in the last few yards, he put his head down and pushed it to the wall.”
The Vikings as a team ended up third as a team in the event. Dakota Crane was second in diving at 237.35 while the 200 medley and 200 freestyle teams of Wolfe, Lucas Miller, Logan McBee and Max Shannon each took third while Miller was sixth in the butterfly and fifth in the breaststroke. Wolfe was also sixth in backstroke.
“I had a feeling that we would be third,” Long said. “Everyone set a personal best at least once today and some set new personal best in each events, so they all did a great job.”
Wolfe will be going to the state meet in Evanston, which will start on Friday.
