Vikings lose out in overtime

---- — NORMAL — The Danville girls basketball team rallied hard in the second half of its IHSA Class 4A regional quarterfinal against Normal Community on Wednesday.

The Vikings forced the game into overtime, but could not get the final points it needed as they lost 50-49.

“I thought we showed at lot of heart and intensity going on that big run,” Danville coach Brian Anderson said. What a comeback. But we just didn’t convert at the end and that’s the story of the game. We had a few chances and come up short.”

The Vikings were down 38-20 late in the first half, but went on a 20-1 run to take the lead at 40-39 in the third quarter on a 3-pointer by Alexis Hoskins.

Danville was up 45-44 with 19.2 seconds left in regulation, but Normal Community tied it on a free-throw to send it to overtime.

In the extra period, Normal coach Marcus Mann was charged with a technical foul with 22.5 seconds left, but Michaela Jones missed both technical free-throws and a last second layup.

Jones ended up with 20 points and five assists for Danville, while Hoskins had 17 points and five steals and three assists and Megan Burton had eight points.

The Vikings end the season with a 12-15 mark.


Hoopeston Area 50, Westville 33

HOOPESTON — Mason Layden had 16 points as the Cornjerkers continued to stay in the hunt for the Vermilion Valley Conference title.

Trey Layden had 15 points for Hoopeston Area, who outscored Westville 35-18 in the second half, while Brennan Crose added nine.

Kyle Brazas led Westville with 12 points while Jeffery Thompson had eight and Jordan Romo added six.

The Cornjerkers are 17-9 and 10-2 in the VVC and will play Milford on Friday while the Tigers are 15-12 and 7-5 in the VVC and will host Salt Fork on Friday.

Milford 67, Schlarman 45

MILFORD — Alex Portwood led a balanced attack with 19 points and seven rebounds as the Bearcats defeated the Hilltoppers.

Jeff Cann had 14 points and seven rebounds for Milford, who had a 30-24 halftime lead, while Wade Fox had 12 points , six rebounds and six assists and Jake Rogers had 11 points and seven rebounds and Tanner Davenport added eight.

Gavin Stines had 10 points and four assists to lead Schlarman Academy, while Michael Simmons, Gannon Hughes and Chris Kuchefski each had nine points and Ben Watson added eight.

The Bearcats are 17-4 and 9-4 in the Vermilion Valley Conference and will play Hoopeston Area on Friday while the Hilltoppers are 0-10 and 3-18 and will play Oakwood on Friday.

ARMSTRONG — Dylan Cosat had 10 points as the Buffaloes rallied in the fourth quarter to beat the Trojans.

Adam Scott had eight points for Georgetown-Ridge Farm, who outscored Armstrong-Potomac 12-8 in the fourth quarter, while Dylan Bina had seven, Garrett Martin and Tyson Reed each added six and Rylee Goodwin added five.

Austin Rademacher had 14 points to lead the Trojans, while Dentler Loschen had nine and Brandan Snyder added four.

The Buffaloes will play Chrisman on Friday while the Trojans will play Bismarck-Henning.
