Vikings lose out in overtime

NORMAL — The Danville girls basketball team rallied hard in the second half of its IHSA Class 4A regional quarterfinal against Normal Community on Wednesday.

The Vikings forced the game into overtime, but could not get the final points it needed as they lost 50-49.

“I thought we showed at lot of heart and intensity going on that big run,” Danville coach Brian Anderson said. What a comeback. But we just didn’t convert at the end and that’s the story of the game. We had a few chances and come up short.”

The Vikings were down 38-20 late in the first half, but went on a 20-1 run to take the lead at 40-39 in the third quarter on a 3-pointer by Alexis Hoskins.

Danville was up 45-44 with 19.2 seconds left in regulation, but Normal Community tied it on a free-throw to send it to overtime.

In the extra period, Normal coach Marcus Mann was charged with a technical foul with 22.5 seconds left, but Michaela Jones missed both technical free-throws and a last second layup.

Jones ended up with 20 points and five assists for Danville, while Hoskins had 17 points and five steals and three assists and Megan Burton had eight points.

The Vikings end the season with a 12-15 mark.
