Blue Devils suffer first VVC loss

MILFORD — Senior Jeff Cann had a double-double with 17 points and 11 rebounds as the Milford Bearcats handed the Bismarck-Henning Blue Devils a 65-59 loss in a Vermilion Valley Conference makeup game on Monday night.

Milford, which improves to 15-2 overall and 7-2 in the Vermilion Valley Conference, also got 17 points from Alex Portwood.

The game also saw the return of coach John Spezia to the Bearcats sidelines. Spezia has been out since an Dec. 31 accident in which he broke several bones, including his leg.

Bismarck-Henning, which falls to 20-2 overall and 8-1 in the league, got a double-double from senior center Wilde Garowski, who finished with 18 points and 13 rebounds, while Dylan Allen had 12 points for the Blue Devils.

Both teams are back in action tonight with Milford traveling to Westville and Bismarck-Henning playing at Hoopeston Area.

Salt Fork 65, Schlarman 34

DANVILLE — Senior Max Stutsman scored 12 of his game-high 22 points in the second quarter as the Storm rolled past the Hilltoppers in a Vermilion Valley Conference makeup game.

Stutsman, who was scoreless in the first quarter, made three field goals and he was 6-for-6 at the free-throw line in that second quarter as Salt Fork built a 31-18 halftime lead.

Also scoring in double figures for the Storm on Monday night was senior Ross Learnard with 14.

Gannon Hughes was the leading scorer for Schlarman Academy with 11 points, while Michael Simmons had nine. The Hilltoppers were playing the conference makeup game on Monday, as they had to postpone the makeup contest originally scheduled for Monday with the Covington Trojans.

Both teams are back in action tonight, Schlarman plays at Armstrong-Potomac, while Salt Fork travels to Georgetown-Ridge Farm.
