Local Roundup: Vikings take fourth at Big 12 meet

STAFF REPORT

BLOOMINGTON Julie LeCleir had a second place finish in No. 1 singles as the Danville girls tennis team improved from eighth place to fourth place in the Big 12 Invitational.

LeCleir upset Bloomington’s Kara Clemens in the semifinals 6-2, 6-2 before losing to top seeded Katarina Marjanovic of Urbana 6-0, 6-2.

In other singles action, No. 4 Christine Janesky, No. 5 Grace Resha and No. 6 Bethany Sexton each took third in their tournaments while No. 3 Alexis Julian was fifth and No. 2 Melissa Fuesting was sixth.

In doubles, the No. 3 team of Resha and Sexton had the highest finish for the team at third, Janesky and Fuesting was fifth at No. 2 and LeCleir and Julian was sixth at No. 1.

Danville will start sectional play Friday at Urbana.

GIBSON CITY — Cassie McCorkle recorded a team-high eight blocks as the Blue Devils beat the Gibson City-Melvin-Sibley Falcons, 25-16, 25-13 in a non-conference contest.

McCorkle, who also had four kills, was part of four players that combined for 20 blocks on the day for Bismarck-Henning (15-2). Jeni Free was next with five, Alexis Walsh contributed four and Courtney Reinken had three.

The Blue Devils had four players share team-high honors in kills with McCorkle, Reinken, Hannah Ohl and Kristen Tuggle all having four.

Up next for Bismarck-Henning is Tuesday’s Vermilion Valley Conference match at Milford.

College Cross Country

Kotut third at Parkside Invite

KENOSHA, Wis. — DACC’s Mathew Kotut was able to sprint to third place at Lucian Rosa Invitational at the University of Wisconsin-Parkside with a time of 25 minutes, 44 seconds.

Zach Bowling was 80th (27:51), Doug Powers was 81st (27:52) and David Guinn was 128th (28:40) for the Jaguars, who did not have a team score.

In the women’s race, the Lady Jaguars took 29th as a team.

Abby Albers led the way for DACC with a time of 21:29.

win in Kankakee

KANKAKEE — DACC won one game at the Kankakee Tournament over the weekend, beating Milwaukee Area College 25-21, 25-22, 26-24.

Paige Murphy led the Lady Jaguars with 26 kills, Brittani Brandon had 25 kills, Anna Rush had 15 kills and Cortney Keagle had 14 kills.

Toni Duval and Keagle each had six aces, Taryn Nohmer had 48 assists and Duval had 37 assists.

DETROIT — Mark Pontow had two goals as the Inferno continued their successful road trip against the Mountain Cats.

Cory Weinicke had a goal and three assists and Robert Bann, Cameron Hughes and Matthew Benton each had a goal and an assist.

The Inferno will take on Motor City to end their weekend trip today.

Leverenz qualifies for state meet

OAKWOOD — St. Paul’s Jon Leverenz finished third overall in an IESA sectional at Kickapoo State Park with a time of 11 minutes, 37 seconds.

With the time, Leverenz will go to the Class 1A cross country meet on Saturday at Normal’s Maxwell Park at 10:45 a.m.
